A new MHEG channel has appeared on the HD mux, called "The Space"

The text has a logo, and says "Launching May 2012 thespace.org"

Footer says "Arts council England in partnership with the BBC".

Is this using the PIDs that you observed recently?

So do we now know what is using the HD MUX capacity per-Olympics? At a guess an interactive art project, maybe allowing the BBC to test out some interactive features currently absent on that MUX?

Yes- the service list now has 5 entries rather than 4:
Code:
           DVB-DescriptorTag: 65 (0x41)  [= service_list_descriptor]
            descriptor_length: 15 (0x0f)
               service_ID: 17472 (0x4440)[ --> refers to PMT program_number]
               service_type: 25 (0x19) [= advanced codec HD digital television service]

               service_ID: 17608 (0x44c8)[ --> refers to PMT program_number]
               service_type: 25 (0x19) [= advanced codec HD digital television service]

               service_ID: 17664 (0x4500)[ --> refers to PMT program_number]
               service_type: 25 (0x19) [= advanced codec HD digital television service]

               service_ID: 17540 (0x4484)[ --> refers to PMT program_number]
               service_type: 25 (0x19) [= advanced codec HD digital television service]

               service_ID: 20288 (0x4f40)[ --> refers to PMT program_number]
               service_type: 12 (0x0c)  [= data broadcast service]
The last one (20288) is the new one, and that appears in PID 6900 which then refers onwards to PID6910, so the two new PIDs that appeared on Monday are used by this new service.

I think this is the Arts Channel from the BBC

There is no Footer there now, it only says "The Space" in Bricks on the left-hand side

Listen to the website by Clicking on the Speaker on the top right-hand corner

No information as yet

A text application will not consume many bits; there are sure to be enough left for LCN304 to be the fifth HD stream. If you hadn't heard it will be simulcasting 301 but in HD.

Hmm, The Space works on my TV. It even has seek (FF/Rew) functionality. So, the question is, why can't Connect TV make their services compatible?!

So you are seeing video streamed over IP already? My humax and technika hd boxes both just see a static MHEG graphic. Anyone else got streaming video, and if so on what devices?

Reports suggest that this channel is on Mux 1 in pre DSO areas. Are the BBC legally allowed to sell off Mux 1 capacity? I know that they are allowed to do that on BBC B but does this extend to the temporary HD mux now only available from Pontop Pyke?

I'm not sure there is any commercial profit aspect to this, seems to be more of a non-profit art project: http://www.artscouncil.org.uk/fundin...ding/thespace/

Plus, here is the list of 53 commissions: http://www.artscouncil.org.uk/fundin...e-commissions/

DMOL now showing LCN117 on pre DSO Mux B and not on pre DSO HD mux.

Same for 302 as well for good measure. Are they right or wrong?

I suspect wrong as 193/194 is still missing from the list.

Same with my Humax HDR-Fox T2 only static MHEG graphics and no streaming video on the Connect channels. 117 does not appear to be on Emley Moor as yet.

Just done a new Automatic Scan just to be sure of my observations, looking at manual scan for RF Frequencies

302 on 58 here = Mux B
117 on 58 here now = Mux B but it was on 68 before the rescan, or so I thought ...

Thanks a lot Sue, seems the BBC don't know whether they are coming or going.

If 302 stays on Mux B, then BBC THREE stays on Mux 1 and CBBC will have to move to Mux B before the Olympics but all this is unnecessary for Meridian because it will have DSO'd by then.

LCN117 is right to be on a Pay TV mux like Mux B and also NOT on the temporary HD mux. 302 might yet move back to Mux 1 but equally it can stay on Mux B.

Yup, at the mo here:

Mux 1 has
BBC One, Two and Three and the CBBC Channel and BBC News, BBC Red Button and 301.

Mux B has 302, 303, The Space, Sky Sports 1 and 2 and Radios 1, 1Xtra, 4Extra, 5 Live Sports Extra, BBC Asian Network and BBC World Service.

Er... there's no pay element to The Space. It does make more sense for it to be on mux B though, otherwise people will lose it for two weeks during DSO!

There's the "matched capacity" unused, so it'll be quite happy remaining on B I'd have thought.

The Space will only be 25kbps or so. It is not a matter of bitrate but the BBC using Mux1 for commercial activity. Mux B is better all round and does not need any special permission to host a third party venture. Even if The Space is a charitable foundation, the BBC has no right to use Mux 1 for its carriage whether it charges for the bitrate or not.

Ray you are making a lot of assumptions here. I don't see the difference between The Space and The Community Channel. If the BBC can enter an arrangement for the Community Channel as they did before it moved to COM5, I don't see why they can't for a similar venture on Mux 1.

You can bet that in any case the BBC will have gained permission from Ofcom to carry The Space.

As it's a charity arts project, maybe you might want to wish them luck?

Yes, and in truth, isn't this the sort of content that the BBC should be providing anyway?
