Watching a recording on Sky+ yesterday, my Panasonic TV suddenly switched to BBC Four. Used the remote to switch back, and it happened again. I wondered if it could be the batteries in the remote failing, so switched back to AV1 and immediately took the batteries out. It happened again. And again.

So I took the batteries out of the DVD player's remote. That seemed to cure it. But why? It is a Panasonic DVD recorder so it can control the TV channels and volume, but why would flat batteries cause it to start switching the TV from AV1 to terrestrial when the DVD unit was in standby?

Or is there another explanation?

Could be sending spurious signals which are mis-interprated by the TV (or DVD player which then signals to the TV).

When the batteries in my universal remote controlling my Matsui TV started getting low it would send the signal for "7" on my Goodmans DVD Recorder when increasing the volume.

Ended up on BBC Three far too many times while trying to increase the volume!

What puzzles me is that [a] I wasn't touching the DVD remote and [b] the DVD remote doesn't have a button to switch the TV directly from AV1 to TV. So do remotes spontaneously send spurious signals as a result of the batteries running down? Or is my TV really haunted?

When they get low they go funny - the works Pani tv is a particular git for that! One possibility is that the DVD remote was sending the AV signal (or something interpreted as such) to the DVD player causing the TV to flick to it's input?

Oh, and TV's often has direct inputs which aren't present on the remote - my Sanyo TV has those which are really handy on a universal remote!

I think you need to call Ghostbusters. If that fails try The Exorcist

Gremlins , put the offending remote in a drawer, if it still does it get the Horizon team on the job .

Back to non ectoplasmic IR sources.

Any low energy/flourescent type light sources in the room ?

Check the Power On preference on the settings menu . Make sure its set to TV if you want the set to go to Freeview from standby.
If the problem persists switch around the inputs of the various devices .
Or change the scart lead for the device connected to AV1. If you don't have a spare swap the ends to see if that changes it.

If you don't use the auto switching feature for the Sky+ box switch that to another input too.

You could change the remote code settings for the dvd recorder. It likely came preset to Remote Code 1 , change it to Remote Code 2 - but only if the other ideas don't work.

Don't forget if you change the remote codes on the recorder to adjust the remote itself too

Actually yeah that's a great idea. Put it in a drawer for a couple of hours and see if it still randomly changes the channel If it does then there is something rather suspicious going on...
