Falling Down

A masterpiece which is probably more apt now, with its themes about downsizing, redundancy, stress, traffic congestion, racial tensions, poor customer service and greed? It is Michael Douglas's best role and one of my favourite films.

I like it where he fires the rocket launcher at the roadworks, but my favourite is the Whammy Burger scene. I know he feels about revolting fast food and poor customer service.

good movie. A great reflection on society. Michael Douglas is the best anti hero ever. Do you really want him to be with Barbara Hershey at the end? I wanna be with Barbara Hershey all the time

The funny thing about the movie is that I'm not sure it's actually about Michael Douglas' character at all, but rather Robert Duvall's, who I think is a far more interesting character.

Yeh good point. Robert Duvall is always good. I think Robert Duvall is there as the stabiliser. His job is a cop but he shows sympathy for 'Defens' He knows where he is coming from but he knows he is wrong.

I always think about this movie when I visit a fast food joint that won't serve me what I want because it's either too early or too late.

I also believe that this movie gets unfairly tagged as a vigilante movie.

And indeed it was marketed and sold as such. I clearly remember the posters for the movie showing Douglas standing on the grafittied concrete block where he meets the gang members, and they had superimposed a shotgun over the baseball bat he had in his hand during that scene.

Great movie and Douglas and Duvall are fantastic.

"I'm the bad guy?"
"Yeah"
"How did that happen?"

Brilliant film and a refreshingly brilliant ending (for a Hollywood film).

Easily Joel Schumacher's best film by a massive margin too. A bit of an unknown mini-classic from the 90s that people don't talk about.

Unconvincing? Every day on my way to work 'slow walkers','mobile users', 'people paying for train tickets, with a credit card, at peak hour', 'people standing in shop doorways chatting'. Everyday people are so rude and inconsiderate. If I was a sociopath like 'Defens' I would punch inconsiderate people and smash their iPhone 4 on the floor.

Who hasn't been stuck in an endless traffic jam, been given awful customer service, been hassled by fake beggars? It would probably work even better if it was made now.

Have to agree and what was happening in his personal life just led to a total meltdown...pressure cooker style...

You will enjoy it as what D Fens is railing against is so true now.

Excellent film. I can't decide who steals it, Douglas or Duvall, they are both superb, but it's a movie I have seen time and time again and I never tire of it.

I remember studying this for A Level Film Studies back when I was 17, back then I 'got' it but never in a million years thought I'd identify with it so hard... scary. Damn good film.

And a nice little cameo by Frederic Forrest as Nick, the surplus store owner.
