I am a guitarist and I love The Who. One of the things that tags me to The Who are songs like Baba Oreily, won't get fooled again and I can see for miles. What strikes me about those songs is the drumming. Outstanding. I can't take anything away from Daltery, entwhistle and

Do I prefer John Bonham or Keith Moon? Personaly I like Keith Moon. I would love to hear drummers opinions. i can give you an opinion on Eddie Van Halen or Steve Vai but with drummers all I know is John Bonham or Keith moon

John Bonham is the best drummer who ever lived....and subsequently died.

Technically, Keith Moon was poor but fortunately in rock music technique is only a small part of the package. A total drumming legend.

If we aren't talking rock, imo Buddy Rich and Steve Gadd are the best drummers who ever lived (the fact they weren't in massively high profile bands at any stage of their careers means they rarely feature in fan forum's lists of best ever).

I'm surprised by this, as i have always been impressed by what i've heard and seen from Moon, though i'm no expert.

This.

Led Zeppelin were the masters when it came to being the best at what they do... John Paul Jones being one of the greatest bass players of all time and Jimmy Page possibly being the greatest guitarist of all time.

It's a pity that most of their songs were boring. Back to Keith Moon, though, he was simply brilliant.

im in some agreement, not knocking zep in particular but they didnt really appeal to me in the way the who did, and in particular keith moons drumming. im no fan of the drums as such, but moon and baker have impressed this reluctant music fan.

I think when Keith Moon died The Who where never the same band. Good drummers are hard to come by. I love Stuart Copeland from The Police who is Taylor Hawkins, from Foo Fighters, favourite drummer. The thing about drummers is you can drum or you can't. I can't. As a guitarist I can set the bar with Steve Vai but with drumming I could not even keep the same tempo for a minute. I have a ton of respect for drummers they are great musicians and the heartbeat of any band

Totally agree. Moon's contribution to The Who was more than his drumming skills. There was a chemistry with the rest of the band that was something special. Once Moon was gone, it just wasn't The Who anymore.

Bonham generally gets the nod from other top musicians as the best of alltime, but Moon was probably the best 'showman' of alltime.

Also, Bonham's final breakfast of 4 quadruple vodka's is quite something!

"The thing about Keith is that I've seen everybody play in this business, and he's still the best drummer I've seen in my life. And that eccentricity showed up in his drumming so that there was nobody like him - Ginger Baker didn't drum like Keith, Mitch Mitchell didn't, Ringo didn't. He was totally unique."

Alice Cooper.

Moon is a legend. But if we're talking about ability, Terry Bozzio and Dave Lombardo spring to mind.

The Buddy Rich Big Band were pretty big in their day!

For The Who, Keith Moon was the best drummer, but he never was heard to play in any other band or genre of music, so who knows whether he was technically versatile. I'd say Phil Collins was equally as adept if not technically a better drummer, as at least he proved that he could play drums in a jazz setting as well.(Brand X)

It's obviously the cool and easy option to blame Phil "naff" Collins for the debacle, but that's not the reality of what happened. The whole band were under-rehearsed, there were equipment problems, Plant's voice was shot and Page's guitar was horribly out of tune. The fact they had two drummers who had never played together before clearly didn't help either - but Collins was invited by Plant to play (and if Plant thought Collins was a crap drummer he wouldn't have had him on his solo albums), plus Collins played fine for Clapton on the same day.

The thing about Keith is that when he was on stage, he was so much more than just a drummer and that's what made him so great. For me anyway. I don't care much for the technical stuff.

He also put so much effort into it. The guy was a force of nature. It's one of the main reasons "My Generation" still sounds so fresh today. It's one of the great drumming records of all time - no question of that. Just compare it with all the other pop records from the same time and you realise how extraordinary it was.

It was a lazy comment. Collins is one of (if not the) most talented musicians in the world. Writer, singer, drummer, pianist, and has produced his own albums. Can only think of Pete Townshend as rivalling him for talent.

Regarding Keith Moon, he is referred to as being technically exceptional by critics, but its his showmanship that makes him stand out probably more than any drummer ever. Meanwhile off the stage his trademark cherry bomb routine is legendary.

Bonham is generally regarded as the greatest drummer, while Moon is the biggest star to play the drums.

as John joked about Ringo "He's not even the best drummer in The Beatles"

but that kind of gives a clue to a better answer
Keith was the right drummer for the Who just as Ringo was for the Beatles IMO

skill is only part of the package
