Youview delayed until end 2012

Hi,
With the news the youview has now possibly been delayed until the end of 2012 (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/n...iew-delay.html)

I kind of feel humax needs to cut its losses and look to bring a new box to market. As a 9200 owner who has been holding out for youview it's just looks like the delay is now too long and with the advent of the new freeview capabilities that current humax boxes do not support (eg.iptv like connecttv).

The Uk seems to have backed itself into a corner while the rest of Europe is now following the HbbTV standard.

In the words of Lord Sugar himself....it's a bloody shambles

It's difficult to see what YouView is apart from a marketing exercise aimed at Freeview users, but, surely, since it is essentially a streaming service it would be better integrated with a digital TV rather than a PVR: I don't suppose it'll be possible to record the stream, or even skip adverts.

Any IPTV system is going to hit problems of speed and download limits unless ISPs can be pursuaded to introduce IPTV friendly tariffs so viewers can watch as much as they like without buffering - or maybe it'll just use an ADSL connection directly to the ISP's network, bypassing the Internet - in which case the project would need much more collaboration with ISPs.

What would you be looking for in a new box over and above what a Fox T2 has to offer pending the eventual arrival of a Youview box?

Quite.

The HDR Fox T2 is the natural successor to the now problematic 9000 Series. And the HDR Fox T2 just missed out on some of the IPTV shenanigans that Youview is supposed to address. The Youview models will be the next evolutionary step.

No matter which brand or model you buy, your purchase will always be out of date a few months/year later.

Fed up waiting for Youview too, every time it gives a date it is delayed again for a further 6 months. Getting ridiculous now

I want an HD PVR with a guide that can be viewed in list view rather than that horrible grid view. The only one currently doing it is the Sagem 190 which I already have and is the worst unit I've ever owned tbh!

My Digital Stream Freeview HD PVR has a list view option for the EPG. In fact I have never used a PVR that did not have such an option.

Yes, why all the delays, I thought that with Alan Sugar being the Manager things will improve, not so it seems?

You can't have had many pvr's then as only a handful have ever done list view. Off to look at the Digital stream now.

EDIT: Can you give me the model number of the Digital stream you have as I've found 2 so far?

Is it The DIGITAL STREAM DHR8203 Freeview+ HD Recorder - 320GB or the Digital Stream DHR8206U Freeview+ HD, 1TB HDD?

2ND EDIT: Never mind, having read the reviews on these pvr's I wouldn't buy one.

I have owned three brands and four models but played with an awful lot more. Perhaps we are looking at different parts of the market?

Really? Which reviews are those? Best PVR I've owned, by a considerable margin. Although I have no idea why gomezz thinks it has a list view option for the EPG. If that option existed, I'm fairly sure I'd have found it by now!

You mean that when it eventually does turn up, it will be thoroughly disappointing?

So Gomezz, how come you have list view on your PVR but
njp who has the same one, doesn't have it??

Do you know what 'list' view is?

It seems I was wrong about List View on the DS. That is what comes of playing with so many different makes and models, their feature sets all become confused in the mind. I know that List View is a feature for which I can see no possible use as I prefer to choose what to watch by programme content than by channel.

List view can be useful as it usually shows the full programme names which is not usually the case with a grid view. My first PVR (a Technotrend) had only list view EPG and having got used to it I found it difficult to adapt to the grid view. However, after having got used to the grid view I preferred it, mainly because of the ease of seeing multiple channels displayed at the same time.

To see the full name in the EPG just highlight the entry and you get the i-plate details (at least it does on boxes I am familiar with).

I don't get how this has taken so long, it is just TalkTalk TV (DTT/IPTV hybrid) with a fancy looking UI.

Where is the hold up?

Yebbut you can't see it at a glance.

Rather than starting with a clean sheet of paper (like the rest of Europe who have adopted HbbTV) the UK has decided to try to make all the old UK services from the BBC/ITV/C4 etc merge with each other. As all the UK systems are different this is proving to be very very difficult. The outcome (if any) will be a very complex and unique STB designed for the UK only, so that will make it more expensive. More worrying is the fact that TV's in Europe will all have the HbbTV standard built into them and the TV manufacturers are less likely to include very expensive technology suitable for the UK only.

Yes, that is the advantage of the list view.

At the cost of only being able to see what is on one channel at a time. Very restrictive.

Not restrictive at all. You don't see grid view of channels in a newspaper, you look at one channel at a time which makes choosing what to watch a much more simple process. Just because you don't like it doesn't mean others won't prefer it.

My OH even puts up with the Sagem 190 which is an awful pvr, just so he can have channels in list view. Now that you have learned what list view is, if you were to try it, you might like it.

Not true. My listing magazine lets me peruse many channels across the timeline all at once. It is an odd paper indeed that has the listings for one channel on one page then the listings for the next channel on the next page etc etc.
