Was just wondering if anyone had any experience with at home laser hair removal?

Been looking around online and found very mixed reviews (I am suspicious that all the good reviews may have come from employees of the various companies!)

Would be grateful to know if anyone thinks they are a good investment!

I have a phillips lumea i was sick of spending a fortune at salons for laser hair removal and sometimes they don't even do it properly in the areas you really want them to. I got it from boots for about £400 works well only used it on face at moment but has attachement for larger areas such as legs, under arms etc.

Is it permenant though? or does the hair grow back?

no lasar treatment is permanent despite what they say it grows back finer have patches where i've had no regrowth though.

Does it hurt? Does it feel like normal laser treatment in salons? I cannot take the pain

I've got the Lumea. Its the older model one as was on sale in Argos at £250 compared with £400 for the newer one.

I have to admit i started off with much enthusiasm for it and had a schedule of when to apply it (only every 2 weeks) so was doing different areas over a couple of nights every 2 weeks.

According to the instructions you shave before the first treatment and then after about the third the hair should be that fine you don't need to shave.

I'm not at that stage yet. On my underarms its definitely thinner hairs. On my lala there are bald patches but its not all gone and same on bikini line. BUT I got a bit hit and miss with keeping up to it.

The other thing is that it has 5 intensity settings on it. 5 being the strongest and 1 being the lowest. I started off on 4 and moved to 5 but then I got a tan and it doesn't work as well on tanned skin so now I'm down to intensity 3 which I think makes it less effective.

I've never had it done at a salon but would say yes it parts it stings like someone has flicked you with an elastic band.

Its also time consuming. The window for the laser on mine is maybe 1cm deep and 2.5cm wide so you can work out how long it must take to cover a large area. Armpits I reckon take about 5 mins each. To do full bikini and hollywood I reckon it takes about 25 mins.

Legs I use a white eyeliner to section off and ensure I have done them all. It will only do half a leg before it needs recharging.

All said, I think its made the hair thinner, if I keep up to it I expect to see results but its not a permanent solution. You have to keep using it to see the results.

There are loads of reviews for the Lumea on the net. I did read a lot of them before I bought so was aware of all the downsides I have mentioned above.

I have Boots own brand Smooth Skin, which is meant to use stronger levels than the Phillips, resulting in no regrowth. It's amazing.

I'm also considering laser hair removal. Got some odd one or two facial hair that keeps growing and often gets ingrown, causing weeping skin. If I shave only and don't use tweezers, it looks ugly.

DON'T Shave. For any facial hair, I would either get laser treatment or bleach it, depending on on how light/coarse it is.

@Jaysean - So is it pain free? I am thinking about it!

its not pain free it feels like a pin prick the more you use it the less it hurts. there different settings lower setting don't hurt much

I have the boots one. Not too painful but did find it easier if partner helped with back of legs to ensure coverage and it is time consuming, however after 4 treatments i have very little regrowth and what there is is very fine. I am naturally pale skinned and very dark brunette and i think this helped the effectiveness

Yes- the paler your skin, the better it works, because you can have it on a higher setting.

Thanks so much for all your help! Reckon I might go for it, though won't be expecting miracles - just can't be doing with shelling out a tenner for razor heads all the time

I used to use a TRIA home laser hair removal device which for me was ineffective which was disappointing. I live and work in London and popped into the London Premier Laser Clinic after work to see if they could offer any advice - it turns out that the reason might be because I use sunbeds a lot and my skin is very dark. I don't know what to do - does this mean I will have to stop using the sun beds and wait for my tan to go before I can use my device? So basically if this is true it means I will have to be pale but hair free or hairy but tanned..

Have you tried the other methods of waxing or epilation for hair removal? These types of hair removal have a regrowth of a few weeks, although these are painful, they are effective. If your happy with the results you could then look at long lasting methods like Laser Hair Removal, which although its not a permanent solution it is a long term solution, regrowth would be thinner and hair would appear finer.

Can you tell me did that laser removal is safe to every kind of skin, even if I have sensitive bright skin?

While I can't comment on home laser treatments, I used to do electrolysis back in the day. Whether the hair grows back or not depends on the stage of the hair when it's removed. This is why we used to recommend clients shave the area a few days before treatment. You need to remove the hair while it's at the growing stage in order for the treatment to be permanent. I can only assume this is the same for laser treatment too. I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong!
