Anyone been to one of these?

We were in one on Saturday in Chertsey and it was a very nice place, very family orientated and with a good looking and very big menu.

What was more surprising though were the prices. It was very reasonable indeed. We thought things were going to be pricey down south but got a 20oz steak with chips, peas, a mushroom & tomato for £11.99
and the pints were the same as up here around the £2.85 mark.

I have been to one a couple of times, I have actually mentioned them on these forums at one time or another, used to go as a student as the portions are massive and fairly cheap.

Although if you want a refined dinner it is probably not the place to go, I can imagine some posters on here saying certain things about these places. When I went to one with the family my parents just turned around again, as it was packed and had screaming kids running around the place (this was in the evening about 8 ish when I would have thought it would have been a little more subdued)

But personally even though it isn't a place for an "adult family meal" where you want some relaxation and quiet conversation, I do think it is a great place to stop in for lunch and get an extremely filling meal.

But I have to admit I haven't been to one in a good 5 years so could have changed completely - I remember the Cow Pie (as in Desperate Dan) and 20 oz burger

It's good if you want cheap, ok quality food. Never had a bad meal in the ones I have been in but I also don't expect them to serve up 5* food. Again, it is good for what you pay and all nice and edible in my experience.

Another one that is similar that I went to for the first time a couple weeks ago is a Sizzling Pub: http://www.sizzlingpubs.co.uk/ again, good value but nice food. I had the All American Combo and it was lovely, the ribs just fell off the bone. I king sized it and had a full rack of ribs as I was remembering Harvesters half racks being tiny. But on the plate I got 2 half racks and they were both quite big. Was too much really but I enjoyed it and very good value for under £10.

We knew it was a chain pub but we were still impressed for what it was.
It's in the same vein as Wetherspoons and Yates and around here we have a couple of Ember Inn pubs.

I'd say the menu at the Hungry Horse/Green King pub looked better. Obviously we didn't get to try much of it.
Simiar to Sizzler and Flaming Grill pubs.

Ate at one in Ipswich, thought it was not nice at all, food very dry, asked for it without peas, it came with peas. Much prefer Wetherspoons

there is one like 3 minute walk from my house, food is usually nice and good value, I usually get steak and chips and they mostly get my steak right, I always ask for medium but sometimes they come rare but I don't mind that, drinks are cheap as well.

It sounds like the kind of place women with fat red arms on show go.

Probably with a boyfriend/husband in some kind of "England" top. Maybe accompanied by some grubby children with names like Kayleigh and Jayden.

Spot on. But they do a decent steak though.

Just did my daughters 5th birthday party at one as ours has a soft play area that you can hire out.

Food is cheerful and sorta cheap, bit more pricey then weatherspoon but at least its consistent (I suspect a lot of it comes pretty much ready prepared). Curry night is not bad either. Very family oriented.

I was looking forward to the 20oz megasaours steak but our one seems to have stopped doing it.

I eat there every now and then and suffice to say I don't match your description. Fortunately it sounds like I won't be bumping into you there either.

Only ever been to one and it was nothing like that. Maybe that's more to do with the area that you live in.

The one we were at was a massive place. Not just the pub but it had a beer garden and play area and a mini football pitch.

It was the megasaurous steat that we got.

I've had the 20oz steak quite a few times (I think its a t-bone) but it seems to have disappeared from the menu at our local one when I was there a couple of weeks ago.

And yes in summer they are excellent for kids. Ours has a indoor soft play (pay for), outdoor play structure and separate area for the kids to run around, beer garden, BBQ, pond with duck and bouncy castle.

At the end of the day, the food is not Michelin star but its not bad, and its great that the kids can run around and that you can chill out. Ours is also pretty big pub but always busy so I'm guessing that they must be doing something right.

The one we were at had two steak specials.
The megasauraus was a 20oz rump for £11.99.
They also had a 16oz T-Bone for £14.99.

As I say, it's a chain pub and if you've been to similar establishments then you pretty much know the standard of what your're going to get. I'd say it was a better menu than Wetherspoons which is probably the default comparison.
