During my exploration of Dutch music(don't ask) I came across the most successful singer in their history, with these stats:

9 number 1 albums
15 number 1 singles
Sells out football stadiums for 10 nights in a row.

This is the crowd reaction to most of his songs:

Yes he is an average looking bloke, but he has a good voice, although some of his songs seem quite cheesy. He chooses not to sing in English, so remains unknown over here.

Any other legends you can think of that are unknown in the UK?

Side note: Had a young lad at work who had never heard of this singer

Sweden's top rock musician Tomas Ledin immediately springs to mind.

A headmaster's son from Sandviken, Tomas began his career in 1972 as a Bob Dylan type folk singer. Then he switched to rock. But he has performed all styles including pop, blues, soul and West Coast jazz.

He records predominantly in Swedish but does the occasional English language recording.

He is married to Marie Anderson Ledin, the daughter of the late Abba manager Stig Anderson and runs a record company with her.

And he's still gorgeous at 60.

Mahalia Jackson
She was and remains The Queen Of Gospel.
They are making a film about her this year.

Fancy not having heard of Buddy Holly!

Marco actually has a great voice. In looks, he reminds me of Robert Powell.

But in Britain, it's all about image over talent.

Mahalia Jackson is another good one.

Also Barbara McNair, Marlena Shaw and German singer Peter Kent (who does record in English).

Didn't Tatu continue to be massive in Russia? Despite their career going sour over here a long, long time ago... I could be imagining this.

Wouldn't surprise me, considering their most celebrated singer is Mr Trololol himself Eduard Khil:

Nana Maskouri?????? Apparently she has sold more records than Celine Dion, Diana Ross, Shania Twain, Janet Jackson, Barbara Streisand, Dolly Parton and Britney Spears - NEVER heard of her, not even in passing!

I'm 22 and I've heard of Buddy Holly but I've never listened to any of his songs.@allthatyouwant: I've heard of Nana Maskouri (sp?) because mum has a CD of hers.

I suppose it's a generational thing then - you would just presume someone who has sold 206 million records to be more well known (I know everyone else on the list (wiki) but not her)

Blackmore's Night, Doro Pesch, UDO, Accept, Running Wild, Die Toten Hosen are all pretty big in Europe especially Germany but rarely get mentioned here.

I'm 19 and it pisses me off when:

- People don't know who "The Boss" is.
- Have never heard of Clarence Clemons
- Don't have any idea who Tori Amos is.
- Believe "Better The Devil You Know" was created by STEPS.

That is all.

It's not like Kylie 'created' it though either, and for the record I much prefer Steps' version! You have your taste but expecting people to know everyone you do is a bit silly. I reckon some teenagers probably aren't that aware of Madonna - it's not a crime. I think that Tori Amos is very well respected and I like a lot of her stuff but I would think that you are in a minority of people your age who've heard of her. As I said, I don't really think there is, or should be for that matter, a list of artists everyone should know or like, and it would be impossible to get everyone to agree on it anyway.

I don't believe there are any music legends I've never heard of. If I haven't I'd argue their music legendery status ...

true, she had 'trademark' big black rimmed glasses.

and its mouskouri .... well known in the 60's her 'white rose of athens' though never charted but she did score a uk #2 in 1986 with 'only love'. she had a string of uk hit albums.

i presume by 'legend' the op refers to 'big star'... not the same thing according to the dictionary.

In the US without a doubt, here not sure if he has even had a top ten album, but I may be wrong.
