Conspiracy theories are popular to some people because, imo, they offer up the rather flattering scenario in which the reader knows the truth whilst others (the brainwashed masses/sheeple etc) are blind to it. Basically they appeal to people's egos.

I agree with the above.

I did enjoy the line about how governments would be obsolete if all the problems were gone. I suppose that day will also be the day that lemonade falls instead of rain, and everyone gets a free cherry pie.
