Best sportsperson to compete in different sports

Who do you think is the best sportsperson to compete in different sports?

Rebecca Romero

Suffering from a persistent back injury, Romero retired from rowing in 2006.[6]

Cycling

Romero later took up track cycling, and made rapid progress in her new sport, specialising in track endurance events.
In December 2006, Romero won a silver medal in the pursuit at the UCI Track World Cup event in Moscow – her international cycling debut – losing out to fellow Briton Wendy Houvenaghel.
Romero won her first Cycling World Championships medal in March 2007 with silver in the 3 km pursuit.[7] The following year, at the 2008 UCI Track Cycling World Championships, held in Manchester, she won the individual and, (with Houvenaghel and Joanna Rowsell), team pursuit events.

Beijing Olympics

She became the first British woman ever to compete in two different sports at the Olympic Games when she rode in the individual pursuit in Beijing. In winning the gold, she also became only the second woman of any country (after Roswitha Krause of East Germany) to win a medal in two different sports at Summer Games

Not sure how you would define the best but Ivan Lendl has won 8 majors in tennis and played on golf's European Tour as well as the Nationwide Tour in the States.

Ann Haydon reached the final of the World table tennis championships in 1957.

12 years later as Ann Jones and a change of sport she won Wimbledon.

The wonderfully named Nova Peris-Kneebone won Olympic gold at Hockey for Australia in 1996 , and then won two golds in athletics at the Commonwealth Games in 1998 at 200m and the 4X 100m

There are quite a few who have played cricket , and rugby or football. Andrew Stoddart captained England at both cricket and rugby union

Didn't he get to a final qualifying stage, but not as you say to the actual tournament.

Ted Dexter was a very good golfer and could probably have qualified for a British open had he been so inclined

JPR Williams was apparently good enough to be a pro tennis player

Mick Channon, top footballer and now a top race horse trainer

Joe Hart is meant to be an outstanding cricketer

More likely the US Open then.

What's wrong with calling it the British Open, and I meant " a" as in the sense that he could have qualified for more than one.

Eric Heiden.

Probably the greatest speed skater of all time. Won all five gold medals at the 1980 Olympics.

Then switched to cycling - won the US Championships and was part of the first American team to compete in the Tour de France.

Then he became a surgeon.

No one from yesteryear as it was simply a matter of being rich enough to get involved in them all... and F1 isn't a sport... it's a computer game nowadays.

I think it's so hard to judge now as people are hearded off into different camps.

Freddie Flintoff is on record as having a bad record at U16 and U17 level as a bowler as he never got a look in; a kid by the name of Phil Neville was the main strike bowler at that age, lucky for Freddie he picked football.

Wilson the NZ winger played Test level at Cricket and Rugby... Deoin Sanders won a Superbowl and played in a World Series... that's pretty incredible when you look at how many people want to be in American sports.

Humm, I wonder if all of the players that have been "duel code" player count (i.e. played both Rugby League and Rugby Union)??
As they are both seperate sports, with losts of completely different rules.

Also, there is Kurt Angle, who won Olympic Gold in Atlanta in the wrestling event (with a broken neck), and has now transitioned into professional wrestling, first with WWE, and now with TNA, and won multiple titles in both orgaisations, and he is now in training for the Olympics again, and is trying to be the oldest Olympc wrestler to capture a medal.

Similar to that is Brock Lesner, who was a superb college athlete, then moved into the WWE and won multiple titles there, and then moved into the UFC where he won the Heavyweight title in just his fourth MMA bout.

I'd say it would need to be completely different sports.
Rugby league and union still fall under rugby. The same as wrestling in the olympics, wwf or tna. I'd say if you went from wrestling to boxing then that would be enough of a difference.
Same as cyling track to endurance. Still cycling.

But it's up to you guys to post what you want

Quite a few US track and field stars in the past moved to the NFL because it paid better. Bob Hayes is the best example as he won Olympic 100m gold in 1964 and was part of the Dallas Cowboys winning Superbowl team in 1972.

You can add Renaldo ("Skeets") Nehemiah to that list, first man under 13s for the 110mh and a Superbowl winner in 1984.

Staying with hurdlers you can't forget Nigel Walker, Olympian at the 84 games but switched to Rugby Union due to stiff competition from Jackson, Jarrett and Ridgeon. Then earned 17 caps for Wales.

A couple more NFL stars spring to mind who also played baseball in the major leagues - Bo Jackson and Deion Sanders.

Fry was also a good rugby player and almost got his University Blue at that sport.

Denis Compton's brother, Leslie, was a better soccer player than his brother and a good county cricketer.

Many cricketers in the past also played top level rugby and soccer. Probably most notably Andrew Stoddart who captained England at cricket and rugby.

Another England cricket captain, Johnny Douglas, won the middleweight boxing gold medal at the 1908 Olympics.

David Acfield, a very good County spin bowler, also competed as a fencer in the Olympics.

I suspect a lot of those who compete in the comincal 'professional wrestling' are failed (American) football players.

Chris Balderstone - played for Carlisle Utd and county cricket then became an umpire

Michael Jordan - NBA and Minor League Baseball
