I hope others post but it might be just me and you nickyyyboy .I posted some Northern up in here last night in a " music you enjoy that not many people know " thread . There was another fan came in called Lamaestra maybe he/she will post in here . Im older now but we used to go to so many all nighters/venues ...totally lived and loved it . The happiest ive ever been in my life ...I love Northern Soul and im glad you do to

Anyway, I dont know if you know THIS site or not and bear with me cos im not sure how to do a link or even if im allowed to, but google ...." soul source forums " ...honest it is THE place for Northern Soul fans there are people in there whove never done anything else ...Northern Soul has been and is their entire life . Have a trawl through there get an account ( free ) introduce yourself maybe start a thread and ask what youve asked here ......genuine advice and I dont think youd regret it. Their forums are pretty busy all the time and youll also find loads of venues/weekenders etc

Back in the day this record was barred from " best Northern Soul record ever " polls it was kind of just accepted that it was the best ....but there are just thousands...its one of the best things in the world if you " get it " innit.

and a random couple of others

I got into Northern Soul in 6th Form.

One of my favourites is the Judy Streete original of 'What!', which charted for Soft Cell in 1982.

And I love 'Here I Go Again' by Archie Bell and the Drells which I've heard at Northern Soul venues.

I'm a she incidentally!

yeah..." Stop pushing at the back " ! ..ironically this was one of the few weeks we never went which was precisely because we knew they were going to be filming ...people who were there that night said it was awful cos of the bright lights for the cameras but these days im kind of glad bits of it were saved for posterity .

We watched this waay back the night it was first ever broadcast in a mates living room ...his mum knew we all went to the all nighters and when she saw the guy aeroplane spinning at 6 minutes 10 seconds she was genuinely shocked . she was shouting " Look at the bloody state of him ...is that what its like" ? ....fact is , thats what it WAS like .

mods?....

different era, different style of dress/fashion... although the northern soul movement did raid the back catalogue of older tracks that 'fitted' their sound. alot of northern soul tracks were just older tracks picked up and used by the movement.

as i understand it northern soul was big in the 70's, (not sure when it started), long after the original mods were over.

didnt think the second wave of mods (late 70's jam/ska) were into northern either, those i knew were into contemporary mod material...the jam, new wave, ska...

Bump

I've just started getting into Northern Soul which seems to be making a revival recently and there's a film due out later this year with a good cast including Steve Coogan, Rick Tomlinson & John Thomson.

The original scene passed me by but I'm really enjoying checking out some of the great tracks on Youtube some of which have been mentioned above e.g What by Judy Street.

It's also good to see that John Newman's video features a Northern Soul background and he is obviously influenced musically by that era.

My favourite dance tune ever.

I discovered it about a year ago.Tragic that I'd been deprived of it for so long!

I'm like you,op..a bit of an NS novice, so I'm looking forward to lots of recommendations on this thread.

You're right,mushy.
I think Northern Soul's heyday was around '68- '74.
It didn't coincide with the Mod movements of either the early-mid sixties or late 70s-early 80s.

I agree.

Started listening around '68', when I used to dress in a skinhead sort of style. (I don't recall it even being referred to as 'Northern Soul' at that early stage)

As the years went on, the trousers got wider......and wider!

Here's just one of my faves from those days:
