Old Classic movies

Been watching a few oldies of late.

It's a Wonderful Life
Shadow of a Doubt
The Time Machine
Topaz
True Grit

Got 20000 Leagues Under the Sea booked on my PVR.

Mainly watching them off freeview, anyone know of any other good ones coming on soon? Looking at mainly pre 1970 movies.

C4 has had a whole slew of classic 50s on in the afternoons. Today it's "The Ladykillers".

I was in my local ASDA yesterday and noticed they had Orson Welle's Citizen Kane and Touch of Evil. Two classics I'll add to my collection this weekend.

My PVR just recorded that, forgot I booked it in last week.

Seen the 2004 remake but never got round to watching the original one.

An absolute classic that's been a huge influence on a lot of science fiction movies and TV shows. Great fun too!

You're a lucky man to see them in that order. Most people have seen the original and then the remake.

dead of night would have been a classic 50s movie if it hadnt been made in 1945

Can't speak for anything coming up on freeview, but if you're after oldies then (imo) Double Indemnity is a great one to watch.

I agree, and if you want to see the best Stanwyck performance of all time, The Lady Eve is on the Classic Movie channel practically every week, although it is not Freeview.

The golden oldies tend to pop up quite a lot these days. They are worth seeing though. I watched one recently, made in 1956 I think, starring John Mills as a detective investigating a murder in a small town run by corrupt officials, many of whom have a lot to hide. It was called Town on Trial, shown on Channel 4. First time I have ever seen it, and it was pretty good for its time, although a little dated.

I stll think of Some Like it Hot as a recent film, which just shows how old I am.

I remember going to the opening at the London Pavillion, and the whole audience was in hysterics, great comedy which is just as funny 53 years later.

Bad Day at Black Rock with Spencer Tracy as a one armed war veteran investigating the death of a Japanese friend in a small desert town. Needless to say the locals - Robert Ryan, Lee Marvin and Ernest Borgnine aren't too happy about this.

I saw that, too. It was like a mix between a 1950s episode of Midsomer Murders and an American hardboiled noir. The dancing scene with the brunette lady was quite racy!

A true 10/10 film.
Off the top of my head I'd recommend watching Ace in the Hole.

Watched a few more old classics.

20000 Leagues under the Sea
Broken Arrow (1950)
El Dorado
Call Northside 777
Rio Grande
The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance

Preference towards James Stewart and John Wayne movies.

The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance has been my favourite so far.

I've barely scratched the surface of the Classical Hollywood era, I'd imagine there are hundreds of classics I have yet to watch and the great thing is a whole new world of cinema has opened up to me.
