{ - The Marvin Gaye Thread of Appreciation - }

The previous AT i created seems to have gone haywire.

So basically i have created another one, to discuss the genius-ness of Marvin, he rebellled against the system and record labels....what was considered Commercial then he challenged....stuff like "Heard It Through The grapevine" Motown said would be "unsellable" and the likes of his opus trilogy of albums "Whats going on, lets get it on, i want you" Really pioneered the Quiet Storm, Urban Contemporary, Urban Concept sounds in Pop Music without label permission...and Marvin really did prove that regardless....the music, the lyrics really speak for itself.

I have yet to buy Here,My Dear (his misjudged "divorce album") and Midnight Love his final album (contains his final hit Sexual Healing) before his death two years later in 1984 aged 43.

So yeah lets discuss Marvin the musician, the entertainer, the artist, the personality.

As for me alongside Madonna, Prince, Kate Bush, Fleetwood Mac, grace jones and The Doors...Marvin really is among my top top top favourite artists!

It makes me wanna holler.

Marvin definitely wrote this with 2012 in mind, his music transcends time, again....proof that when you write from the soul, from your personality...you cannot have a sell by date on that.

Yay! thankies for posting!

Yeah they very much are! It is so tough to believe Sexual Healing was his final hit...before he lost his life in such dark circumstances.

So glad his legacy in music and entertainment surpassed that dark background....fascinating.

His legacy is admirable, no doubt! Wasn't he inducted in the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame just a couple of years after he died? But you're right, it's kind of ironic that his signature song was his last hit, but he had been releasing music since the 60's, so he has a lot of material to be discovered.

I've heard very few songs from his back catalogue, around 10 or 15 I believe, but he's in my list of artists to discover this summer

'What's Going On' is one of his most legendary songs, so the album probably follows suit. I'll definitely check it out sometime. I also want to listen to his final album, the one that includes 'Sexual Healing'. It was his comeback in the 80's, after a long break and a label change and it was an overall happy time in his life when he recorded it (or so I've read ), so it'd be interesting to hear what he came up with.

One thing's for sure though. He was one of the best entertainers back in the 60's and 70's. He was so energetic on stage, judging by a bunch of live performances I've seen. He was FEELING IT!

The thing is though Midnight Love (his final album with Sexual healing) may have been his "comeback" but he stated openly in interviews that basically he didnt make the album for himself but for the public and the label....so basically while he had a massive single from it....he was telling people in his own way not to buy it...but it still had good reviews tbh and performed well I just find it really funny that he went literally THAT far out of the system and against it.

Whats going on definitely is an ALBUM album, i love albums that can tell chapters and stories and that one sure does! Definitely try and check it.

And yeah totally a definite pioneer...i mean marvin IMO exceeded where MJ, Stevie Wonder, etc commercialised and pleased labels...Marvin was always several steps ahead of the game.

Also what i read was he wanted to try out for a football team...forgetting the fact he had like umpteen chart smashes and how famous he actually was! It was like he didnt care for his "celebrity" in public at all really bless him
