Must admit I fast forwarded through a lot of this to get to the performances at the end.

Whenever I've seen conductors conducting opera they have their backs to the stage, so how they can cue the singers and be in time with any of the actions on stage beats me .

Huh? I've seen live opera hundreds of times and never once seen the conductor with his back to the stage.

I was under the misapprehension the conductor had his back to the stage and only had to worry about the music . Since watching this year's Maestro I see he has a lot more to do and as this clip from the ROH shows is facing the stage. I think Antonio Pappano as well as being an excellent conductor is a great communicator.

Just me then!

I'm glad Craig won, he's so "into" the opera, it's grand to see

I was expecting Marcus to go through based on the comments about how he knew the piece so well!

Yes I am. Although I said it was all going over my head I want to see it through to the end and I do love La Boheme. I'm also pleased to see Craig through to the final.

I once went to see an opera at the Royal Opera House - it's so beautiful.

I think Craig went through based on his passion

I really have never thought how difficult the conductor's job is. So many people to control, as well as the orchestra and the children. He's got to be on top of it all!

I thought that was interesting and gave me some insight into how hard it really must be to conduct.

Great programme, and great final, though I'd be in the more episodes camp as well.

What was the music (background) that kicks in at around 7:50 on the iPlayer as they are introducing Florence after Craig packs his suitcase?

Thanks in advance. It seems very rousing and joyous.

Agreed even though I had to watch on iPlayer as my box didn't record for the second time in a series of just three

More episodes would have been good as I could have failed to record even more!

I thought it was from Turandot but I'm afraid I couldn't place it, and I know I'm going to kick myself when someone does but I'm going to have to ask on another forum...

Absolutely...

And a great "first opera" for any opera virgins out there...

There's even a wonderful film version on DVD, it's available on Love Film too so no excuses http://www.amazon.co.uk/La-Boheme-Th.../dp/B001RE9HG6

A little clip... "My name is Mimi..." where Mimi is telling Rodolfo about herself. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X0xx-OA9mJE

No luck so far, but it didn't occur to me that iPlayer doesn't work outside the UK...
