I don't know what the general consensus is with regards to grey squirrels on this board is, but I really wanted to share these photos I took.

We have a squirrel (who we have named Sid ) who is a daily visitor to our garden. My mum recently bought a bird feeder, which he clearly likes. We've also been leaving some bread out on our little garden table, which is quite near our back door. He's so used to us watching him now, that earlier he came right up on a garden chair which is also right near the door, and leaned as close to the door as he could to get near us. He moved so quickly though, I only managed to et one of his back, and of of him with a blurred face.

He's a bit chubby, but so adorable, so I wanted to share these photos...

If you hate grey squirrels, humour me and tell me how cute he is?!

OP we.are lucky to still have reds where I live. I quite often see them on early morning walks. They are so much nicer than greys. There is a grey eradication programme around us, it is needed because reds are so endangered.

Never seen a red one round my way

We've never had any problems with greys, so the idea of trying to eradicate them makes me quite sad.

You've never seen a red because the greys have taken over, hence the eradication program to stop this happening where reds still exist, should have started years ago.

I'm "well jell" - i love squirrel's.

I accept they're a nuisance to some and each other but they just make me laugh with their jumpy little moves.

I WANT ONE!!!!!!!!

Everything living wild is a nuisance to some....

I've always like squirrels, we get black ones in some areas around here.

We have a couple of grey squirrels in our garden, we're have about 4 feeders but he is after the nuts. We make him work for it though. The feeder is a metal one on the end of the branch so he has to hang upside down from his tail to get any. The metal mesh feeder is doing quite well considering the abuse it gets. We used to have a proper squirrel feeder when he had to lift the flap to get the nuts but he broke the plastic bit at the front by leaning on it!

When I was a kid there was a wood behind our house, and a little squirrel started to come into our garden. My dad would feed it nuts. The squirrel eventually became confident enough to come and knock on the window each morning for my dad to give it a nut.

He is so cute!

I adore squirrels. Opposite my house is a row of Lime trees with a fence in front of it, several squirrels live in those trees and come in my garden on a daily basis.

I often leave nuts on the fence for them and they run up and down the fence several times a day looking for them. I have also chopped up pieces of apple and put them on the fence and they love those too! I will have to try and get some photos of them.

They are not as daring as the squirrels who live in the local town's abbey gardens. They are so used to people that they will take nuts from people's hands and will dive straight in to my bag of nuts if I leave them on the floor!

In the summer the squirrels will enter my garden and swipe all the strawberries and blueberries given half the chance. Then in the Autumn they are after the conkers as they eat the outer conker shell. They are always in the garden raiding the bird feeders too.

Thanks for posting up the photos of Sid, he is a beauty! Good on you for feeding the squirrels, I love them too despite people calling them rodents, they are just so sweet.

^Maybe we'll leave some apples out, and see if he likes them! He's a bit plump, so some healthy stuff might do him good!

I live in East London we also have squirrels in our garden and yes they are so cute, love the way they sit there with one paw to their chest,I say she is holding her handbag

My garden is a mess though with the shells!!

They absolutely love hazelnuts.....leave a couple of hazelnuts so he gets a taste for them, then slowly entice him to eat from your hand with the hazelnuts.....They will ignore all other foodstuffs if there are hazelnuts present.

We had a family in our garden a couple of years ago....so much joy watching their 3 new young leaving the nest and exploring our garden....unfortunately, slowly but surely they "leave home", and the parents are no longer around either.....

I would entice more squirrels into the garden with hazelnuts, but we now have too many local cats visiting the garden and I think this has forced the squirrels away...I don't want to see any squirrels being killed by the cats....although I doubt they would catch one...they are so damned quick.

Lovely creatures though & absolutely fascinating to watch...and a great sense of achievement if you can tame a wid one to eat from your hand...a real sense of trust and a bond developed.

Don't know if I'm brave enough to let it eat from my hand. Although, when we went to New York when I was younger, the squirrels in Central Park would come right up to you, one came and rested on my leg! I guess they are far more used to people though.

And perhaps the squirrel may not be brave enough to eat from your hand....

It's a trust thing....

Their claws can be sharp, but if you offer the nut at a height level where the squirrel does not have to climb onto you (ie, from a wall or platform) then you have nothing to fear.

Remember though, keep very quiet and still & once offered, do not withdraw your hand if the squirrel approaches....try it on your own....lookers on will simply scare the squirrel.....

It can take time, but it's worth it in the end....

Once a bond of trust has developed, you can then work on getting the squirrel to sit on your knee or shoulder to collect and eat the nut....most will just collect the nut from your hand and run off with it though....

Regents Park and others in London squirrels will take nuts from your hand!

Chingford. Cemetery has lots of squirrels they are also tame!

Yes they do love hazelnutss and walnuts but they are expensive and the little buggers can be quite greedy

I'll give it a bit more time before I attempt it I think.

We don't really eat hazelnuts and walnuts. I'll try the apples and see if he likes them.

We've given it a boys name, I have no idea if it is a boy or girl though!

Any kind of ultra-cheap bird nuts from Aldi will do, I imagine! They're not so fussy that they'll only accept stuff from Waitrose.

This is also correct, but would you eat Turkey Twizzlers if you had a choice of a nice juicy sirloin ? (apologies if you are veggie, just swap foods around for context )

You can buy big bags of hazelnuts on line.....yes they are expensive, but it depends on how generous you want to be with your furry friends...if you had neighbours for instance all leaving peanuts out and you wanted to entice them more to your garden...a bag of hazelnuts would do the trick..but once they're all gone the squirrels will just move on to the next "free cafe" !!

We've left out birds nuts, and he liked those, as you can see from the pic of him eyeing up the bird feeder!

What a cheeky little thing! We don't have Squirrels on my island, it's a wonder no-one's tried to introduce reds.

Just wanted to do a little update in Sid. We hadn't seen him for a couple of weeks, so were fearing the worst, but he made an appearance on Sunday! Still as chubby as ever. We've moved the table in the pictures above, and he came onto the paving and was looking at us at the door and then back at the table, as if to say "Why have you moved it?!" Bless him. He then noticed the bird feeder was hooked on the tree instead, so climbed up, and was hanging upside down, knocking it like a mad man to get the nuts out He didn't flinch when we went in the garden either. He stayed out there for a good couple of hours, just sitting in the tree watching us, and eating nuts!

I love squirrels, however they do loads of damage to properties. My mum and dads house had a squirrel take up residence in the roof, you could hear him chomping through the wooden joists He also bit through the TV aerial wire. Needless to say he was evicted.
