Best Non-Fiction about comics...
What do you think are the best non-fiction works about
comics? I'd nominate "Men of Tomorrow: Geeks, Gangsters, and the Birth of the Comic Book" by Gerard Jones, which gives a really insightful look into the genesis of Superman, Captain America, Batman, and the lives and careers of their creators. The "Slings & Arrows Comic Guide" by Frank Plowright and company, is an excellent guide to various issues of comics and reviews them on how good they are-mainly American, but also European. The Comics equivalent of the various Film Guides and essential reading. But what are your choices? |

The Slings and Arrows Guide is brilliant - bought both editions and read them both to death. Also a fan of the three Scott McCloud books - Understanding, Making and Reinventing Comics.

![]() I also quite liked Peter David's Writing for Comics and Graphic Novels... sure, it's more on the writing angle but it dissects a lot of old stuff from an interesting angle. Warren Ellis' various collected essays are also good but not always entirely about comics... Do Anything primarily is but I actually preferred the Bad Signal collections |

I always like Lance Parkin's "Pocket Essential" bio of Alan Moore, so
I was interested to learn he's turning it into a full-length biography. |
