Monkey-both the opening and closing themes.
Sweeney -loved the way they reprised the opening theme melody in the closing theme, but made it all mellow and gentle, rather than punchy and aggressive as at the start. It helped you wind down at the end, and reflected the fact the stories often left you in a thoughtful and slightly sad mood at the end. |

Waterloo Road. I just have to jam out when I hear it.
Doctor Who without a shadow of a doubt is my favourite though. |

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers
If that theme doesn't make you want to kick someone's head in, nothing will. |

And when, at work, when we're all feeling a bit down. I reach for my phone and play the theme from Terry and June. That cheers us all up. ...and luckily we don't have to watch it.

For me, you can't beat the theme tune Grange Hill had for its first 9-10 years (can't remember exactly when they ditched it). It was quite an odd little thing-and I loved those comic-strip credits that went it (that young Michael Jackson lookalike's face, when the sausage on the fork comes flying onto his table! Priceless!
).

They are both good theme tunes and both represent different eras of the show. Seeing as I watched the show when it used the 1990 theme tune that's the one I prefer, but I do think it's a better theme tune than the original one anyway. Remember, the original theme tune was used for the first 10 years but the second theme was used for 17 years, so more people are likely to remember it over the original.
They brought back the original theme for the last series when it reverted to being more slapstick and comedic under the new CBBC target audience. Phil Redmond actually publicly stated they should just axe it because he wanted it to become more dramatic and obviously this was the exact opposite of what he wanted! |

They don't make 'em like they used to - no point nowadays as they get talked over by the announcers advertising the next programme.
Here's a few from the past http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fBYti...ture=endscreen http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature...&v=JVSpj1Dg6YA http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6tf7rxlKoc4 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ryyBa4dgCG0 |

Songs have lyrics
Sorry to be pedantic - but The OP asked for favourite "Theme songs" - so they must have lyrics and be sung.
Which make this is a fantastic topic actually. Thinking about shows which only had "original" songs - and didn't use existing ones.. The Hanna Barbera cartoons all had great songs. Minder (write da feem toon etc) Family Guy / American Dad Only Fools Cheers But the best of all (for me) is...The Beverly Hillbillies. |

Just remembered the original Baywatch theme by Peter Cetera.
Somebody above mentioned the Brookside theme, good shout, especially the original version. I really liked the Liverbirds theme, and obviously The Likely Lads theme. |

'Miami Vice' is a classic from the 80s, and I quite like the current 'Haven' theme. Too few US series do proper themes nowadays.
Oops, just realised I'm in the UK TV forum. Can't think of a single standout UK TV theme. |
