Im 17 and I am Fixated With 80's music

The 80's revolutinised music back then and still does today, to this day recent artists and recreating 80's songs

In the 80's we had Duran Duran, Foriegner, Madonna (at her best) , George Michael, STarship upon many other amazing artists.

Now we have LMAFAO, Nicki Minaj, Jedward and Rihanna (who wears next to nothing to get attention)

What a difference 30 years makes

There's nothing wrong with that.

The 80s was the last decade which was rich with musical diversity. Rock Bands still got into the charts alongside dance acts. Rap, House and Hip Hop really took off then.
Reggae was still strong; Bowie could still make no 1; Guns N' Roses produced 'Appetite for Destruction'; we had LiveAid, U2's 'Joshua Tree', Public Enemy's 'It Takes a Nation of Millions...' and The Specials, Bananarama, Spandau Ballet, Kate Bush...and many others too cool to mention.

I fear for music now. It's great though that many others still appreciate and remember the fantastic decade which was the 80's

dont worry about it OP ... it shows good musical taste to be able to appreciate music restrosepctively.... for the qualtiy of the song itself.....its strange looking back because the 90s were seen as poor but I absolutely love the dance songs from the 90s ... to my mind the 00s are the weakest decade in a while.... but maybe because its the most recent and currently lacks identity.

I'm in my early 20's and have been listening to Dusty Springfield on a loop since around 12.30 this afternoon.

Seeing the state of the music scene today makes me so glad that I grew up in the 80s and 90s. My two favourite groups are Depeche Mode and Pet Shop Boys and both of them are still scoring Top 10 albums today.

Then you have Madonna and Kylie. I am a huge fan of both artists and it's amazing to see both of them being able to still produce Top 10 singles and Top 10 albums, but of course, it's all thanks to their fanbases.

I'm 22 and I do love modern music but I also love 80s music. I listen to Madonna's 80s songs a lot. Material Girl, Like A Prayer etc are classics! I also like Human League, Kylie's 80s stuff, some of MJ's early stuff and synthpop.

I'm twenty and love all music my favourite artist started in the 70's and the second 99 so as long as music is good it will transcend its time and genre im listening to Fleetwood Mac Rumours right now and its still fresh innovative and brilliant at 35 years old

Yeah that's really clever, generalise all music from different eras by picking a few specific artists as examples, conveniently ignoring every other artist in existence Talk about selective generalisation..

Agreed. It's so easy to slag off modern music if you insist on bringing some of the dross chart music into the debate. It isn't all shit. And not all music from way back when is great.

It's funny you say those two bands as they are my two favourite groups too (along with Killing Joke and Duran Duran, also prominent in the 80s). At this very moment I'm listening to 'More Than A Party' by DM. Same album as Everything Counts - the song that got me hooked to their catalogue in December last year.

Construction Time Again is a good album by DM, I think my favourite of theirs is Music For The Masses

There's something about those 12"/extended remixes from the 1980s that just makes me love them.

"Rock a Little" by Stevie Nicks and "True Colors" by Cyndi Lauper are probably my favourite albums from the 1980s.

I'd have to say Speak and Spell, the debut is my favourite so far. Each album has it's standouts though, Wrong on the last one is fantastically brilliant.

Some of the music from the '80s is great! For instance:

Culture Club — Karma Chameleon
M/A/R/R/S — Pump up the Volume
Madonna — Get into the Groove
Sheena Easton — The Lover in Me
Paula Abdul — Opposites Attract
Aha — Take on Me
Aha — The Sun Always Shines on TV
Whitney Houston — I Wanna Dance With Somebody
Billy Joel — Uptown Girl

Just some of the '80s tracks that I love.

Black Celebration is Depeche Mode's best album imo - one of the best and most influential albums of the 80s.

As much as I love all different types of music, I'm tired of people completely writing off modern music. There is a lot of incredible music hidden under the manufactured chart rubbish.
Literally off the top of my head.

Say what you will about modern music, but there are still some absolute gems out there.

Violator's just got the edge for me. But there's not much in it. BC was when they seemed to secure their sound.

But I've just turned 22 and my music preference is firmly in the 80s - Depeche Mode and Duran Duran being my ultimate favourites. I pretty much lost interest in music at around 2007/8, but there's still the odd few tracks from recent times that I really like.

I was very impressed this morning when Tameside Radio on their all-hit jukebox played my fave song of 1985 and 1986 within 1/2 an hour of eachother! These were Talking Heads' Road to Nowhere and the Bangles' Walk Like an Egyptian.

There may well be plenty more 80s music for you to discover yet BBaddict212.

Yes, there is some great music around nowadays but in the 80s a lot of that music would make the top of the charts and there was much greater diversity in the charts. There were also important genres like Rap, House, ElectroPop, Stadium Rock that reached their high points in the 80s. As I have said elsewhere, there have been no great movements or genres to emerge in 00s music but that doesn't mean an end to great pop just a slowdown.
