A nod to the One Hit Wonder thread.....

What about acts who had one big hit, several lesser singles then vanished.

Olive - You're Not Alone
D:Ream - Things Can Only Get Better

Any more suggestions.....

Deep blue something-Breakfast at Tiffany's.
Evanescence-even though they haven't disappeared they've never really reached the standard of their first album.

Little Boots? She had a hit with Remedy and then her next single flopped.

Evacuate the Dancefloor wasn't even their biggest hit.

I reckon they could have another hit in a few years. They're on a weird record label, where most of the artists signed to it (apart from N-Dubz) can't manage to get consecutive big hits.

"Pocket" should have been as big as "Black and Gold".

Taylor Swift - in this country of course. Love Story was a huge hit, but she's never had anything else chart above 30. Her follow-up album did go Top 10 though.

I think Cascada are an act that will have a big hit every now and again, but the public aren't fussed about the songs in between or the albums.

RKelly is another act who can have a huge hit like 'I Believe I Can Fly' and then go years of minor hits before another such as 'Ignition' comes along.

Another act i'd add to the thread is Leona Lewis, sure she has had big hits since 'Bleeding Love' but her career has been stop-start ever since.

They hadn't released a new album in six years and yet they still managed to debut at No. 1 in the US, No. 4 in the UK and Top 10-20 all over the world.

Of course their new album wasn't as successful as the first, but if Adele's next album doesn't match the giddy heights of 21, will we be calling her "struggling"?

The press and public are already sharpening their knives for the release of the next Adele album, it is the British way to build-up a star and then knock them down. Anything but world-record sales will be deemed a disaster

Michael Jackson is another example, some people would have you believe the everything after Thriller was a flop. When both BAD and Dangerous did 30million+ worldwide and are both amongst the biggest sellers ever, even History did 20Million+ and the much maligned Invincible did 10Million+ figures most artists dream of.

The Calling - Although Wherever You Will Go is a great song and perhaps their best Camino Palmero was packed with amazing songs which should have been singles same with the follow up album Two.

Evanescence did really well in terms of sales and had a great comeback. But after fallen was such a big hit, it was going to harder for them to copy that success. Especially since the line had changed and the songwriting duo of Amy and Ben split, but Amy's great on her own now as well.

Back to the 80s...

T'Pau - after the massive, ubiquitous 1987 #1 they scored with 'China In Your Hand' - which IMO unfairly overshadowed their vastly superior first single 'Heart And Soul' - they managed to scrape one more top 10 with 'Valentine' (coinciding with the eponymous February sick-bucket 'romance' fest), but failed to set the Top 40 alight thereafter. The vibe and 'buzz' created by CIYH was already gone long before 'Secret Garden', the lead single from the second album, stalled at #18 in autumn 1988, and it was spectacularly downhill from there.

Belinda Carlisle - after bursting onto the UK Top 40 with surefire #1 'Heaven Is A Place On Earth', she scored a few top 10 singles intermittently thereafter, but generally under-performed with singles success from each consequent album proving increasingly hard to come by. Shame, as her 1990 album 'Runaway Horses' is one of my all-time favourites.

Cyndi Lauper - after debuting with 'Girls Just Want To Have Fun' in the same week as Madonna debuted with 'Holiday', and rocketing it to #2, it took a second-try re-release of 'Time After Time' to return her to the Top 3 later in 1984, with all other singles from her debut album 'She's So Unusual' completely (and outrageously undeservedly) flopping. A modest Top 20 comeback with 'True Colors' in 1986, and an out-of-nowhere Top 10 in 1989 with 'I Drove All Night' were her only subsequent moments of crowning glory, besides the short-lived novelty value of 1994's 'Girls' reworking to tie in with her Greatest Hits - which, ironically, proved vastly more popular on the album charts that the vast majority of the ignored singles it showcased. She's now relegated to being one of those 'curio' artists that refuses to go away; ie still releasing excellent material that no-one takes any notice of; alongside the likes of Blondie, Grace Jones, Human League etc. And with the way things seem to be going, Madonna'll be there along with her soon!!

Although she has had success since, Jagged Little Pill has basically overshadowed all of Alanis Morissette's subsequent work.

and off the wall never gets a mention either and to sell 110+ of one album how could you ever expect to surpass it.

Another one i thought of miss. Tracy Chapman

Sales wise, no, but in terms of music Fallen is their weakest album in my opinion. Their newest is by FAR their best album, musically and vocally.

I have to say though, they are selling on fanbase alone really since rock seems to be barely impacting on the charts anymore and the sales of their newest album in under a year are pretty phenomenal in this day.

I still think it's pretty insane they shifted 15million of their debut!

Really? I thought Fallen was one of their best and the sales kinda prove that. Amy is going to constantly reinvent herself, her albums are always going to be great, but Amy Ben Moody and David Hodges made a great songwriting team. The only reason Ben created "We are the Fallen" was to get back at her. When Ben was in the band they were at their prime.
