It won't be an easy summer for EastEnders, but it's a resilient show, and once the football, Wimbledon and Olympics are out of the way, and the improvements made behind the scenes begin to be noticed on screen, the show will bounce back.

I suspect Emmerdale will have the hardest summer of any of the soaps, and I think that will have a knock on effect on it for the rest of year and beyond. Every Emmerdale fan I know says it's worse than it ever has been (and let's face it, it's been very bad in the past!), so the disruption this summer will do it more damage than any other soap.
Then again Emmerdale's share held up yesterday whereas EastEnders' took a hit. Coronation Street did very well hitting 40% and nearly 38%. I still don't get why Channel 4 are pitching a comedy panel show against aa comedy panel show on BBC One.

Poor for the soaps, but it doesn't surprise me. They're all so boring lately. There's nothing to hook the viewers regardless of the weather.

It seems like The Chase has overtaken Pointless in recent weeks...
Probably just as well because Pointless was on the verge of causing stomach ulcers on the ratings thread, when it was ahead...

The total TV audience in the 6.30-8pm slot last night was down -22% vs. one week ago. For the other nights of this week since the sun has come out, in that 6.30-8pm slot Total TV audiences have been down: Tue (-15%), Wed (-13%), Thu (-19%) week-on-week.

There were 20.08m people watching television between 6.30-7.50pm last Saturday when The Voice was on. If there's a c20% drop in total no. of viewers tonight in that timeslot (the average drop from the last two days), there'll be about 16.1m people watching television when it's on air. Even if The Voice gets the same 28% share as last week, it could be looking at around 4.5m tonight. A 32% share probably would be just about enough to get it over the 5m mark tonight but I can't see that happening due to the way its share has been falling in recent weeks.

Tarby will appeal to the Coronation Street pensioner audience who are confined to the house cos they will remember when Tarby was a mainstay on ITV in the 70s and 80s when life was simplier and the working classes watched ITV en masse cos there was nothing else to do.
It was a shame Jimmy's TV career disintegrated the way it did in the mid to late 1980s. He had a couple of brief returns on BBC One with a 1991 dating show, and a 1996 golf quiz, but they didn't work out. He was a capable, witty presenter, and ITV just gave up on him, really.

Looks as though last night's total audience drop distorted the Emmerdale share upwards.

You would expect the drop to be more though tonight compared to previous days with it being the weekend, so I think the drop could be nearer 25% or 30%.

Appalling for Emmerdale and EastEnders last night. Coronation Street held up admirably with high shares.

To be fair, 34.5% (exc. +1) isn't a bad share for Emmerdale.

The thing with the soaps is that when total TV audiences drop, you would expect their shares to remain relatively stable or go up because the people still watching TV would be more skewed towards the loyal soap fans rather than casual viewers. So yep, the shares for Emmerdale have been up slightly this week even though its viewership has been down quite a lot. EastEnders though has been doing pretty poorly with its shares of late - I think it's unacceptable for its share to be below Emmerdale apart from special circumstances such as facing an hour long episode of it or live competition.

That's very low for EastEnders. Even with the weather. Corrie held up surprisingly well in comparison.

One would assume Corrie viewers aren't ones for the sun then?

Just realised that The Voice is not ONLY losing some of its live audience to the sun, but some of its overnight recorded audience to Eurovision.

That might hurt more than anything.

Looking at last night's ratings is another real shocker. Ratings are way down on previous year's during hot weather. The drop seems to be larger than just the normal year-on-year declines to me.

Maybe it's just that we've had really poor weather for so long this past 7/8 weeks and then a heatwave comes out of nowhere that has tempted more people outside than normal. Also I suppose there is the fact that the blue skies are literally UK-wide rather than just England.

Yeah, some disappointing EastEnders shares lately, and last night's especially so.

Many PVRs have dual tuners.

Winner Takes All used to attract 14 million viewers and he was a popular host on variety shows. It is sad.

As does mine. There not on different channels anyway - I'm talking about people recording The Voice that night and watching later that night - which is counted in the overnights.

Whats the issue here? Eurovision viewers won't have time to watch both. Its too long. So it won't appear in the overnights, thus hitting them more.

Have YOU got the X Factor? Least hes not in that ridiculous chair. Seriously that Chair and the Hare tell you A LOT about BBC LE at the time (ugh! Then the ****ing shoe!)

I don't know why ITV are doing this as they are, as a weekly show it might do decent. Feels wasted; no doubt they got it dead cheap though - it is after all just a big advertisement for the arena show!

Proof they really should just give the soaps a break and let their fans complain, because they'll be complaining anyway that each soap is only on two nights that week and are being moved around the schedules. Looks like the football highlights are back to alternating between BBC1 and ITV1 dependent on who does and doesn't screen the evening game.

P.S. ITV1 is showing repeats of Poirot, Benidorm, Midsomer Murders and Lewis on nights they don't have football. BBC1 have their regular Sunday and Tuesday night line up with Britain's Lost Routes with Griff Rhys Jones and Call the Midwife repeats on Thursday.
