same time next week, lets see what the comparatives are.
I must say I'm entralled by TV's stategy of launching high and aiming to reduce its ratings every week from there on. Its truely a unique approach and its fascinating to watch it play out.

There are a few stories in the papers saying that Cowell still isn't happy with ITV and they are preparing for talks. I wonder if he will switch to another channel?

The Syndicate had a consolidated series average of 6.01m. It was the most watched new weekly BBC One mid-week drama series since Ashes to Ashes [6.60m, 2008].

At least some good news for us, also announced Haye v Chisora during July in Hyde Park - I wonder if C5 will make a bid for it.
"Warren said he would not be taking a commission from Chisora for the fight, but would make money as a "shareholder" in the Box Nation subscription channel that will air the fight." By the way it's at Upton Park, not Hyde Park. http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/boxing/17987600 |

Alcatraz remains an outstanding performer for Watch. 7 episodes in, and well over 1 million viewers still watching. In the latest set of officials, it was the most watched scripted show of the week on pay TV and second most watched drama episode on multichannel overall behind Desperate Housewives. It easily beat all of the imports on the Sky branded channels including Bones, Game of Thrones, Touch and Hawaii Five-O.
Ratings history to date: Episode 1 (Tue 13/03/12): 1.55m (Repeats: 506k, 296k) Episode 2 (Tue 20/03/12): 1.40m (Repeats: 288k, 322k) Episode 3 (Tue 27/03/12): 1.25m (Repeats: 224k, 228k) Episode 4 (Tue 03/04/12): 1.26m (Repeats: 294k, 341k) Episode 5 (Tue 10/04/12): 1.24m (Repeats: 353k, n/a) Episode 6 (Tue 17/04/12): 1.38m (Repeats: 260k, n/a) Episode 7 (Tue 24/04/12): 1.31m (Repeats: 273k, 207k) Source: BARB. Includes +1 where possible. There's also a third repeat bringing in another 150k or so on average. It's likely to be cancelled after this season but for now they will enjoy these super numbers. This channel has a very bright future, it's a strong brand Watch. |

NBC have picked up another two new comedies. 1600 Penn about a dysfunctional family living in the White House and Animal Practice about a vet who loves animals and hates their owners. Deadline is also reporting that 30 Rock is on the verge of a final season pick-up of 13 or so episodes and that both Community and Parks & Rec are likely to follow the same path. Looks like we might get a heavy comedy rotation at NBC next season. Maybe effectively eliminating repeats from the Thursday line-up with 8-13 episode runs of new shows and returning shows sharing the same timeslots. Quote:
It'll be interesting what shows are picked up and which one are dropped, I've not been following as closely, one of the CSIs will be dropped, I'm hoping it's Miami rather than NY as that show hasn't been good for a while, I wonder if CBS will go ahead with expanding comedies on a Thursday, doing that will reduce the number of drama pickups.

Interesting timeshift:
- 9.33m to 10.51m => 1.18m - 8.62m to 9.17m => 0.55m A big difference. Quote:

I think Watch's major problem at this stage is that they've yet to find a big returnable hit. They had No Ordinary Family last year and Alcatraz this year. Both cancelled after one season. I know that's not really their fault but I suspect there's only so many times you can draw an audience in with a one season wonder. They need to buy in a returnable hit with the new shows coming this year which is obviously much easier said than done. |

Embarrassing Bodies with its young audience profile was affected more by BGT than Extreme Fishing, which actually went up. One for the males looking for an escape route from the horrors elsewhere I suppose. Got to love a bit of Robson, his enthusiasm is second to none.

Interesting (if very predictable) news about the Call the Midwife Christmas special. I know it's far too early to speculate, but ITV could take a right hammering this year with the way things look.
Aside from Call the Midwife vs Downton, which will undoubtedly be the way it's spun by the media and possibly even the way it's scheduled, IMO the bigger problem with ITV is that it has precisely one comedy programme, Benidorm, which probably won't have a Christmas special. Even if it does, it still leaves this situation: ITV: Benidorm BBC: The Royle Family Miranda Outnumbered (probable) Mrs Brown's Boys Gavin and Stacey (possibly) Michael McIntyre Live at the Apollo In other words, ITV really need to get some new programmes out there. Downton and Corrie are all they have right now and it's not going to be enough this year! |

Here's a look at how the four main broadcasters did in the BARB Monthly Shares for April 2012:
BBC BBC1: 20.5% (April 2011: 21.0%), BBC2: 6.2% (6.6%), BBC3: 1.5% (1.8%), BBC4: 0.9% (0.7%), BBC HD: 0.2% (0.2%), BBC News: 0.9% (1.1%), CBBC: 0.8% (0.8%), CBeebies: 1.2% (1.2%) --> Total: 32.2% (April 2011: 33.4%) ITV ITV1: 15.4% (16.5%), ITV2: 3.1% (2.7%), ITV3: 2.4% (2.2%), ITV4: 1.3% (1.3%), CITV: 0.3% (0.3%) --> Total: 22.5% (April 2011: 23.0%) Channel 4 C4: 6.7% (6.2%), E4: 1.8% (1.8%), Film4: 1.4% (1.2%), More4: 1.1% (1.3%), 4Music: 0.3% (0.4%) --> Total: 11.3% (April 2011: 10.9%) Channel 5 C5: 4.4% (4.5%), C5+1: 0.2% (n/a), 5*: 0.5% (0.5%), 5USA: 1.0% (1.0%) --> Total: 6.1% (April 2011: 6.0%) Channel 4 (+4%) and Channel 5 (+2%) overall both increased their market shares year-on-year for the second month running. ITV (-2%) and BBC (-4%) both slipped vs. 2012. In terms of terrestrial channels, C4 (+8%) for a second consecutive month experienced y-o-y growth while C5 (-2%) was slightly down y-o-y or even up (+2% inc +1). BBC1 (-2%), BBC2 (-6%) and ITV1 (-7%) were all down vs. April 2011. The BBC's most improved channel vs. one year ago was BBC4 (+29%). BBC News (-18%) and BBC Three (-17%) fell quite a lot. For ITV: ITV2 (+15%) and ITV3 (+9%) showed decent growth, while their other two channels were flat. For Channel 4, E4 was stable and Film4 (+17%) continued to make big y-o-y gains. More4 (-15%) however was down for a fourth month in a row. Over on Channel 5, both 5USA and 5* were flat vs April 2011. ----------------------------------------------------------------- And here's a look at how the broadcasters have averaged for the first 4 months of 2012 (January to April) vs. the same period last year: BBC: 32.5% (Jan-April 2011: 33.1%) ITV: 22.9% (23.4%) CH4: 11.4% (11.6%) CH5: 6.2% (6.0%) So for the first four months of 2012, CH5 (+2.5%) has been the only broadcaster up year-on-year. The other three broadcasters were down slightly: BBC (-1.8%), CH4 (-1.9%), ITV (-2.0%). |

The BGT semi final was never going to match last years 11.3m (inc. +1) figure but the main show is bang in line with how all the other semi finals rated last year. It's going to be the results show that is the problem. 8.3m isn't great, but I think I read on here the other day from someone (possibly Fudd?) that about 1.3m children watch BGT during half term week so if thats correct they won't be watching the results because its too late, and they are at school this week. The results shows are going to depress the series average quite heavily now. Maybe next year they'll have to move it back to the June week if its possible. Corrie did worse than I expected, but the storyline is no way near as big as the John story last year - but its a far away from the 10.4m that watched the Monday episode last year. But then again, it did have that massive BGT lead-in last year too. Emmerdale remained as consistent as ever. EE rated roughly in line with where I thought it would be. It's probably looking at 5m for the remainder of this weeks episode.

Coronation Street didn't really get any sort of boost airing between BGT. It would've got that kind of rating in its usual 7.30pm slot anyway. I still think splitting BGT around Corrie isn't a good move as the separate results show always loses viewers as some people decide to watch another channel at 9pm and don't switch back at 9.30pm or it's too late for some viewers. If it had been an all-in-one show like Sunday's, that final 30-minutes would've got at least 10.5m (coming off the back of a 11.8m peak) instead of the 8.3m it actually got.
But I understand why ITV keep splitting it: with just a 2-hour show they'd get 6 internal ad breaks and 2 external breaks around BGT. With a 1.5hr and separate 0.5hr show, they still get 6 internal breaks but a higher 4 external ad breaks around BGT. So they probably are making more money per night doing it this way even though they're probably depressing BGT's average audience overall by a million potential viewers. As I've said before though, I still think they should have one 2-hour semi final show per night, with maybe 1 extra auditions show to make up for the fewer adverts they'd have during the semi finals week, so it all balances out. Yesterday's BGT shows were down about 15% compared to last year's Bank Holiday Monday shows. That's quite a steep drop considering the auditions the last few weeks have been rating on a par if not better than last year. But last year's Monday episode did rate abnormally high compared to the other semis, with it going from 10.9m on Monday to 9.4m to Tuesday (-14%) in 2011, whereas in 2010 it went from 10.7m to 10.3m (-4%). ITV will be hoping tonight's show has a similar kind of retention to 2010, if it drops a similar kind of level as last year, it's going to only be down to 8m for the performance show which would be unacceptable. |

Downton and Corrie are all they have right now and it's not going to be enough this year! Re Miranda, everything I have read suggested an "early 2013" return, and that's before ...Midwife intervened. When CTM's ratings went through the roof, I suggested putting this out at 8pm on Xmas Day, with EE taking the 7pm slot ITV earmarked for it last year, would give ITV a real headache. They would not want Coro St (Downton's lead-in) taking a hit from CTM and potentially wrecking the whole night, and an hour of CTM plus 2 hours of DA might just be too much hit period drama for anyone. And for the BBC, an hour of CTM would give a great lead in to whatever they can put up at 9pm (Royles, Miranda, Mrs Brown or otherwise). Of course, we may end up with CTM and DA both appearing on the inviting, and less risky, Sunday 23rd.... Never too soon to draw up Christmas fantasy schedules is it?
