As for The Gadget Show, that is the only competition that tempts me, but I hold strong and dont take part, ratings are not good for this short run.

EastEnders and Corrie look better, the same cant really be said for Emmerdale however.

See the previous post, it's closing the gap on TOWIE. I'm sure you scoffed at Gavin Henson as well, although I accept he's obviously better known overall.

I'm still predicting a hit. The Bachelor series 1 had very positive word of mouth, which is why it grew its audience throughout the run. Expects here predicted it would be in flop territory after a couple of weeks due to the slightly underwhelming premiere but this didn't materialise.

5USA couldn't match last week's 1.6% at 1.5%, but it tied BBC Three and beat Film4 and More4 amongst others.

the first series did ok, but lets not pretend that the last "big name" Channel 5 poached from these so called "programs" was a massive success.

As for last nights The Only Way is Chelsea ratings you are right they look good, cant for the life of me figure out why however.

I suspect this second series wont be as "successful" as the first.

Mate, I don't think you get what The Bachelor is all about. It's a good little format. The US version doesn't cast famous types either and it's very successful. Spencer will at least be familiar to many of the kind of viewers they will be looking to attract.


It's All About Amy flopped because it was a terrible terrible programme with zero purpose or ambition that nobody liked. People who watched The Bachelor said it was great, addictive viewing. Read the thread here on DS and you'll soon see that. One person even went as far to say it was one of the best programmes of 2011!


Well, it was successful so you can ditch the inverted commas. As per C5 release: it performed "above average for all key audiences, most notably young women."

I don't get why people have such a downer on this show in this thread, there aren't exactly many dating shows on TV. Conversely, nothing but good things are said about Take Me Out, which has shown there is very much an audience for this genre.

pretty sure this thread has discussed at length how Take Me Out is just a chance for escorts to meet each other.

Meanwhile if the Bachelor isnt about celebrity, why first announce a "big star" and then announce the big star is almost the definition of a z lister.

As for show, maybe it is well watched by the kind of people who watch The Only Way is "instead town", type shows, but that isnt anything to be proud off, and it had alot of support from Big Brother at the time.

Lets not pretend that this is a highly rated Channel 5 show, or such quality that Sky Arts is looking to poach it.

It was a highly rated C5 show. The final got 1.5 million viewers. In comparison all new episodes of Castle are only getting about 1 million in the same slot at the moment with less attractive demos.

But since it appears we can't discuss this objectively without you bringing your disdain for this genre of TV into it, this will be my last post on the matter.

But it was starting from a high level in the first place. It's like when ITV axed that dull Hugh Laurie drama Fortysomething and the writer moaned that "it may have lost half its audience but so did The Forsyte Saga", not mentioning The Forsyte Saga had twice as many viewers in the first place.

I've said many times on this thread that there are obvious flaws in the format of The Voice - too many people going out at once, all that - but it remains that the ratings are still above average for the slot. And the huge ratings for the auditions weren't a one-off, either - they were consistently high for the audition stages and the battle rounds, so it wasn't as if ten million people tuned into the first episode and all immediately switched off, they clearly liked those parts of the format. The live shows have been less successful - a decline hastened by the scheduling - but clearly people like the auditions and the battles and the decline is clearly not completely irreversible.

And Fame Academy series two was far more blatant a rip-off of another show than The Voice has ever been, scheduled directly opposite Pop Idol and with even the phone numbers just one digit apart.

The official C5 press release describes him as "reality star and one of the country’s most eligible bachelors." Nowhere does it claim he is a big star.

I remeber reading somewhere (possibly one of your posts that Channel 5 had a "big star" for the bachelor.

Thanks for your very well argued, reasoned response. I'm happy to defer to your much greater historical knowledge and fully accept what you say about the BBC's previous problems.

I'm not quite sure why but my comments about The Voice seem to have been blown up into a far bigger issue than I intended. In one sentence my point was simply that I think it's a tactical error that will hurt the BBC in future negotiations. That's all. I really don't think it's a particularly exceptional thing to think. But I accept that many people seem to disagree and obviously that's fair enough.

I think the problem is that we as viewers don't get the appeal of many programmes. I am 42 and I purposely don't watch literally hundreds of programmes.

This Is Chelsea has proved successful for multi-channel, Spencer will bring new viewers to Channel 5 late night. The idea of The Bachelor is to find a potential wife, at least in the US where it gets huge publicity as a primetime hit. I can see it rating a good 1m+, but it will not get close to 2m.

Firstly, Made in Chelsea is awesome.

Secondly, it's not a copy of The Only Way Is Essex. It's a copy of Laguna Beach/The Hills.

But back on point, a really good night for E4 last night and a perfect schedule, IMO. Sitcom repeats from 8-9pm, new US drama at 9pm and UK content at 10pm. Strong ratings across all three hours - no doubt all helped by being part of a stronger programming block.

Demos:
9pm - Revenge - 748,000 (41% 16-34)
10pm - Made In Chelsea - 780,000 (53% ABC1, 51% 16-34)

E4 had a 7.3% all day share among adults 16-34, beating Five (4.6%) and BBC2 (2.8%) as well as its digital rivals ITV2 (3.9%) and BBC3 (4.3%). It wasn't too far behind Channel 4 (8.0%) either.

Revenge dipped quite a bit over the first 3 US episodes (3.3 > 2.7 > 2.4) then levelled out and held it for the rest of the season. If it's still doing OK for E4 through the summer (which will be tough) then it might influence them to go for more "big 4" dramas rather than just the CW's teen stuff.

oh well I take it back, after all I never miss an episode of Laguna Beach / The Hills.

Also for the record I do like Channel 5, but I dont think this part of its schedule.

Strong shares last night for CS and EE last night, the ratings holding up in this warm weather also.

X Factor has been the trailblazing model for talent show success here over several years. At the end of the day Im not sure how you can have audience involvement and not have a format where contestants are voted off by the public. TVUK's flaws are in the way it does that and it might be an argument that it is not like X Factor enough in that respect. For instance imagine eight of X Factors contestants voted off in a two week period -it would be over by November!

Audiences here just do not expect that, and as I say, how can you be innovative, not resemble other shows and have a compelling reason for your audience to stay with you? Im not sure that answer exists and from what I can see, its going to need something truly inspired to be successful and different at the same time.

To me almost every twist and turn of TVUK live process seems designed to turn people away. And as we have seen the audience become familiar with the way things happen the more they have declined. Fix that (which may or may not be easy depending on the approach and should involve changes in coaches imo) and the show stands a chance.

To all those wide eyed optimists who think The Voice can just relaunch fresh next year as if it was emerging from a shower with Patrick Duffy, I dont think its as simple as that.

This year the narrative was that this was fresh, innovative, would blow away The X Factor, much cooler, massively successful internationally, etc

Next year the narrative will be, why should I watch the early stages of the show when I gave up on it last year. Failure has a smell thats difficult to shift. No matter how much deodorant the BBC PR team spray.
