Other way round, I think. The Party at the Palace is a BBC organised event - I think they even handled the ticketing for it via their website. So it'll have been the BBC going to Barlow, rather than the other way around.

Yes I understand they are financing it, however I would have thought there was a competitive contract. According to BBC News earlier, Gary Barlow is the event organizer - he was later introduced live as tonight's host, I realise he has BBC experience (Children in Need Concert / Kilimanjaro etc..) Unless of course BBC1 signed the deal in 2002 for a potential future event.

Can I point out to people that last year the last few weeks of The Apprentice faced repeats of Lewis and this year it was on against brand new episodes. So much tougher competition from ITV1 - which it beat.

And this year was the first time the final of The Apprentice has had to face Coronation Street - which it beat even taking into account the lower audiience for the hour of You're Hired.

And both Corrie and Lewis well down on what they're capable of attracting.

My opinion of The Apprentice is that I didn't regard the candidates as any worse than any other year but I was finding the tasks and arguments and "surprise twists" (when the team they make you think will win loses) a bit samey.

It would be interesting to see in which type of viewer it experienced its greatest drop. Maybe Lord Sugar sacking so many women early on lost him a lot of female viewers.Or maybe the loss of (mostly attractive) females loses the male viewers.

I wonder if ITV (and every other commercial broadcaster for that matter) thought that they would make a loss on it even if it did claim 10m+ viewers for them. I guess they'd still have to pay for the talent?

Neither did the organisers - why was the poor choir on an open stage??? There was something horribly funny about seeing them trying to sing about Brittania ruling the waves when they looked as though they'd taken a dip themselves but...

Firstly, the weather forecasters were predicting heavy rain for Sunday all week and secondly, rain in this country is hardly an unexpected occurence.

Meanwhile I notice The Voice is ahead of The Apprentice on iPlayer at the moment. One further point about The Apprentice and its lower Final rating this year - I'm thinking the interviews is a weak way to end the series - especially after eight series. Bored with yourrude manner now Claude.

Maybe instead of changing the type of contenders next year Lord Sugar should sign a few new interviewers. How about successful businesswoman Katie Price.

Makes the planning look even stranger. I understand that the BBC wanted to be out and about so they had to suffer the consequences but I still can't help thinking about that poor choir!

What is going on with Once Upon A Time on Channel 5!? Factoring out +1, this is the first time its dipped below the 1m mark. They are scheduling it really badly IMO. So far they've aired it at 6pm, 7.30pm, 8pm and 9pm I believe. That is just ridiculous IMO. They need to decide where to put it and keep it there. From what I understand, its supposed to be good show too - so why are they treating so badly?!

I reckon it was moved back to 7.30pm to avoid The Apprentice and Coronation Street. I think it did better there than it would've done if it had remained at 8pm. I'm sure Channel 5 will be looking to give it a more stable slot next year.

But they seem to move it everytime some form of competition comes up. Maybe they should just give it an 8pm or 9pm slot and stick with and see if it holds up. For example, Homeland was given a fixed slot and held up every single week in the face of some very stiff competition at the time.

They are not treating it badly. It would not have rated as well as it has had they not moved it slightly each week to reflect what's happening on the other channels. The mistake was putting it on Sunday nights in the first place which has been a hive of activity of late, they've been slightly unfortunate as well in that sense as that wasn't the case last year. I do have to hold my hands up to thinking it was a good idea originally, evidently not.

Last night's overnight result is certainly disappointing but let's wait to see what the officials say, it's been performing consistently well for them so far in that regard with around 2m viewers including +1. It's probably below what they expected but I wouldn't say it's been a total disaster taking everything into account.

Now if you want an example of how to treat a US show badly look no further than Channel 4 and New Girl. They gave it no chance in the awful timeslot they gave it. Have they even bothered to reschedule it yet?

I seem to remember reading that it's now been moved to E4. I think they're picking up from where it left off on Channel 4.

I could be wrong, though.

You say they haven't treated it badly, but then say putting it on Sunday's was a mistake - so surely they've treated it badly by doing this? I can understand the logic of them moving it to accommodate with other channels schedules, but for the viewer it can be very frustrating IMO. How do we know it wouldn't have performed as well in a fixed slot? They haven't given it the opportunity to. Not every show collaspes in the face of competition. If its really good, then viewers will stick with it. As for New Girl. Agree with all you said. And I have no idea what they are doing with that show now.

Sunday's are generally quiet this time of year so there was logic behind this piece of scheduling - they just underestimated some of the opposition it'd be up against. For example, they may have accepted it would face The Apprentice one week but didn't bank on Coronation Street also appearing - and even if they had they probably gambled it would be aired at 7.30pm, not 8.30pm. Things like this have happened across the weeks which have resulted in changes. While I understand what you mean by taking a gamble and keeping a show in a slot I think they've taken the safety first approaching by moving it out of the firing line which they can't be blamed for.

Only Wimbledon gets the viewers and as a sport it's largely seen as a minority interest.

It is really good. But then this is Channel 5, not ITV or the BBC. They couldn't afford to take that gamble as viewers will put those other channels first when appointment-to-view TV turns up. With shows like The Voice invading on its patch (which was massively massively popular at the time let's not forget) they absolutely had no choice but to move it. And the audience largely stuck with it when they did that, suggesting this was wise. I don't believe it would have held up as well otherwise although obviously I have no evidence to prove this. I think their scheduling department did the best they could by the show in difficult circumstances.

A bigger bugbear for me is their default 30 minute filler show is now Ultimate Police Interceptors, but they don't appear to have many episodes of this in the can in 30 minute form. I know for a fact that last night's episode was only on a few weeks ago. Using the same show as your filler every time is bad enough, but the exact same episode? It did well to even scrape 500k against The Apprentice final and Corrie.
