The Ratings Thread (Part 35)

Here's how The French Open has done in the ratings on ITV so far generally based on the scheduled timeslots:

Sunday 27th May:
ITV4 - 09:30-14:45 - 120k (1.5%)
ITV1 - 14:45-17:30 - 451k (4.7%)
ITV3 - 17:30-20:00 - 214k (1.4%)

Monday 28th May:
ITV4 - 09:30-20:00 - 136k (1.5%)

Tuesday 29th May
ITV4 - 09:30-20:00 - 196k (2.2%)

Wednesday 30th May
ITV4 - 09:30-20:00 - 167k (1.8%)

Thursday 31st May
ITV4 - 09:30-21:00 - 209k (2.0%)

Friday 1st June
ITV4 - 09:30-20:00 - 191k (2.2%)

Saturday 2nd June
ITV4 - 09:30-20:00 - 174k (1.6%)
ITV1 - 11:15-16:00 - 610k (7.5%)

The French Open has had an average share of 1.8% on ITV4 so far, which is almost double what the channel normally gets on a bog standard day. It's done fine for ITV4, although the ratings have been nothing to write home about.

The ITV1 ratings though aren't good. That 610k rating on Saturday 2nd June includes an Andy Murray match and it's only about 100-200k more than what ITV1 normally gets in that slot when showing repeats. The 451k rating for last Sunday's afternoon coverage on ITV1 was around 300k below the slot average. The demos would be better than what ITV normally shows but still, that's disappointing.

So I think going forward next year, ITV should increase their ITV4 coverage so it ends at 9pm every day, not 8pm as currently scheduled (I know it's over-ran sometimes though). As for ITV1, I'd suggest keeping the Saturday afternoon coverage simply because nothing else would rate better there anyway but the ITV1 scheduling on the Sunday dependent on who's scheduled to play. Have the finals on ITV1 and be flexible to move an Andy Murray semi final to ITV1 if possible. I also agree with others have said on the Broadcasting Thread that maybe having a couple of half hour slots dedicated to the French Open on ITV1 in primetime between Coronation Street (Monday and Friday at 8pm where it'd probably get about 3m), would help increase exposure to the French Open and that could have a positive knock-on effect on the ratings for ITV4 and daytime ITV1 if it's plugged well ("switch over to ITV4 now for more coverage", "watch ITV1 tomorrow at 12pm for Andy Murray's match" etc).

As I said in the other thread I think it would be short sighted to cut it from ITV1 next year especially as ITV1 show sod all at weekends anyway during the day, so it's not displacing anything of note. I would have liked to have seen them boost ITV1 coverage next year to include a daily afternoon block but that might not happen now - though there is an argument that to get the ratings rewards they really deserve they actually need to make it much more visible on ITV1, not hide it away.

I'm sure they're expecting it. Party In The Park got over 12m ten years ago, and these kinds of events don't decline at the same rate as the soaps do. A few people on the DSRPG (sorry, Dancc, I'm taking your job ) seem to think the 8.30pm episode will go under 5m.

Haha, that's okay. A role that suits you I must say.

You're very kind for saying that.

I wonder how Revenge will hold up for E4 tonight. I think all the artists from this century have now performed at the Jubilee concert.

Bit unlucky to be coming up against this competition in week 2. But like you say, not much for the younger generation in this lineup so it might surprise and do okay.

All top ten UK trends on Twitter are concert related.

The ratings for the concert will be HUGE. I can see Corrie hitting an all time low or close to it. Twitter is buzzing.

Superb year on year growth for Game of Thrones in the U.S, which wrapped up for the year on HBO last night.

Quote:
“#GoT finale ratings: 4.2 million, a series high and +38% over S1 finale. #gameofthrones”

Girls showing some signs of strength as well,

“#Girls also keeps building: 1.1M last night, a series best”

I'm sure the ratings for the concert will be great but, like these big music events often are, its a bit rubbish to be honest but maybe its just me!

I predicted under 5 million in the RPG. Corrie's never once gone under 5 million I don't believe.

I don't think it will go under. Corrie will hang on.

Must say I am enjoying the concert. Good mix off music.

I really don't understand why they split it instead of keeping it as an hour long episode.

Abysmal scheduling from ITV as per usual.

Looks like it was on Sunday 12th April 2009: 5.43m (25%); ITV2 10pm repeat: 391,000.

I think the 8.30pm episode is going to be below that at the very least.

Given how it rated on Friday it looks likely to go lower tonight for the 8.30pm episode.

That said it is a Bank Holiday again tomorrow so people might record it and catch up after the concert at 11pm. That's one thing in its favour.

HBO usually get the rewards for giving most of their shows a second series even if ratings wise they could easily axe them after the first.

God, an ITV2 10pm repeat. Tonights is at 1.20am - why they don't move it to a more regular 11pm ish slot on either ITV2 or ITV3 I don't know, though I wonder if they have to pay less in repeat fees if they are after midnight.

ITV1 probably would have been best with Emmerdale at 6.30pm and Corrie from 7-8pm tonight.

Based on my unscientific walk down the street about 10 minutes ago there were 2 houses watching Corrie versus 3 watching the concert. I'd say my statistics are about as reliable as twitter. I guys tv seemed to be on Facebook.

Lenny Henry presenting now should depress the concert figures a bit.

No coincidence either that The Queen didnt appear until Corrie finished

I was about to say something along those lines after Dancc mentioned people catching up at 11pm. It'd make sense to repeat Coronation Street then but no, a 1992 film suits the slot far more.
