Does seem odd...ITV should have put Emmerdale on at 8 so i could watch it after the Voice

The Voice needs to stay above 5 million tonight as an absolute priority.

Last time Emmerdale aired on a random Sunday during the World Cup 2010 it could only manage 5.3m. Given it's in worse shape now than it was then, I'd be surprised if it does much better than that tonight. The Voice will probably stage a mini recovery, but nothing to get too excited about from a BBC point-of-view.

Predictions:
Emmerdale 5.6m
The Voice 6.0m

Typical NBC to go for a Fall cycle of The Voice even though it really shouldn't have one. Not a good decision for that show, although I suppose they needed something to give their new shows a leg up. Surprised they haven't mentioned any early premieres after the Olympics although Greenblatt hints at it in his statement so I assume they'll go for it.

Good that they're giving a new drama a shot out of The Voice instead of sticking with Smash, and also pleasing that they're giving new comedies a go out of it on Tuesdays (I assume the Tuesday shows will be there throughout this time to make up for them not having as many weeks). Surprised they're sticking with Parenthood on Tuesdays at 10pm as that was floundering a bit towards the end of last season. SVU will bomb in that slot but I suppose it can't do any worse than it is already with the rancid lead-in it's had. If it can hold a high-1 them at least it can give Chicago Fire something to build on - which is more than SVU has had this season in that slot! Sticking with new comedies on Wednesdays seems fair enough but the Thursday lineup isn't great.

I'm surprised they've kept The Office at 9pm after its decline this year, whilst Up All Night doesn't really fit in with the other shows there. Putting Rock Centre in that slot is truly pathetic though - I know it's cheap but its ratings are embarrassingly low. The comedies won't do well on Fridays but they won't care. Good move for them to keep Biggest Loser back - they can presumably parachute it in whenever something flounders (which will presumably be early on!). Really surprised they've renewed Fashion Star but not Fear Factor, as the latter had much better ratings (it actually held above a 2). Getting rid of Fear Factor would be a very bad move based on ratings so hopefully they haven't done that.

Do we expect a bumper rating for MOTD tonight?

I won't spoil it if you don't know what happened but it was amazing

I suspect the autumn batch of Doctor Who episodes will be more or less over by the time Strictly Come Dancing starts.

Incidentally, last week, I finally got around to watching the final episode of last year's Who series, and all I can say is let's hope the new series is an improvement on that!

I also got around to watching Top of the Pops Christmas Special last week, so I now know who won X Factor last autumn.

I don't know why though?

On a serious note though I think it is such a shame the Voice has crashed. The BBC need to be looking for some more Saturday night shows. Because when The Voice returns next year people will have been put off by the terrible Live shows.

The final might get 6 million it might get lower. They need to rap this series up and assess the situation. They need to get on the Phone to John de Mol. I do think though the responsibly of The Voice's live show disasters lie with the BBC.

All they need to do is to make them more exiting and not as flat. There also needs to be less of them. They could turn the Battle rounds into live shows as well. They should let the judges choice as many as they like and they should have a show where they cut them down for the Live Battle rounds. There should then be a all combined live show and results show with Eurovision style voting and a interval act. The show's however need to be general shorter.

They also need a bigger set and a better judging panel. Presenters are fine.

Lets see what they do. My Idea is probably a silly one knowing me!

Sad, but predictable to see The Voice returning in the fall. In the end, I'm not sure what other options they had - there's nowhere else to launch new shows on their schedule. Revolution and Go On are presumably their two best hopes and they have to get behind them with the best lead-in they've got.

Wednesdays look like trouble to me with two untested comedies, plus a rapidly fading SVU thrust into the fire. And Thursdays look suspiciously like they have a white flag flying over them. They've actually given up trying to save their most famed night.

Nothing at all in there that would inspire confidence in an NBC recovery next year, thats for sure...

And I've just finished watching the grand final of New Faces 1987.

And no wonder they cancelled Doctor Who after the 1989 series! God I hope the next one is an improvement on that!

How accurate are BARB ratings? Is it 100% accurate or could they be wrong. The Voice was low but still got 30% share, more than what Britains Got Talent live 9.30pm show got on Tuesday and Wednesday evening.

I was going to suggest something like that: auditions, battles, final, the end.

The BBC One audience clearly has little appetite for straightforward singing contests (e.g the Lloyd Webber shows), and no appetite for Amercian-looking entertainment shows (e.g. So You Think You Can Dance), and from what I saw last night, Voice live shows seem to combine both of the above. Awful, awful stuff.

I was out watching Cricket today and I think everyone had a radio and was following the unbelievable end to the Premiership. You simply could not make it up. More value to the MOTD contract-the Beeb will no doubt be tempted to overbid again.
Lots of gushing over BGT and its final was seemingly a triumph making a perfect family moment. Its a great figure but not entirely unexpected that it would add 2 million or so above its series average surely, and as it stands its still behind TV audition best isnt it? Perhaps they should just do the auditions for TV next year and leave it at that

That's because more people are watching TV at 9.30pm. I'd say BARB are pretty damn good. As Peter Snow always used to say "There is always a small Margin of error".

That they're putting The Voice on in the Fall isn't even the big problem (although that's bad enough) its that they're giving it a weekly extra hour that's the real problem. That Tuesday 8PM show is going to run for the entire season and not just serve as a results show. So that's presumably two hours of auditions on Monday then a third hour on Tuesday and then two hours of battles on a Monday then another hour on Tuesday. I know Idol and X Factor have had similar schedules in the US since day one but that just feels like its going to kill The Voice pretty quickly.

The early debuts will I'd imagine be announced at the upfront presentation proper tomorrow. Although I'm starting to think that it'll just be early debuts (a 'sneak peak' out of the Olympics) of various shows and then the normal runs will start in September. I think the point of the early pick-ups was to try and eliminate repeats from the schedule rather than to start the series runs proper in August.

Quote:
“SVU will bomb in that slot but I suppose it can't do any worse than it is already with the rancid lead-in it's had.”

I don't know why they keep putting SVU in this slot. They know it doesn't work there. Especially not up against Criminal Minds on CBS. Its not as if they couldn't have put Chicago Fire somewhere else (Thursday or Tuesday 10PM) and kept SVU at 10PM on Wednesday.

Quote:
“the Thursday lineup isn't great.”

Its terrible.

Interestingly though there are reports that Parks & Rec is the only comedy on NBC that's been given a full season order. The Office (which is having the word reboot thrown at it this season) is apparently only getting 13 to start with. So Thursday night could look radically different midseason. I do wonder if one of the Tuesday or Wednesday block breaks out if they will consider moving it to anchor Thursday or not.

They do not. They tried it again last year (or maybe the year before) and it was a disaster. Oddly enough though CBS have just picked up a show that sounds very similar to The Apprentice.

I know I'm a bit slow! I'm clearing out my erratic PVR before buying a new one.

Been an up-and-down sort of week, but the format is still strong and has more longevity about it, I feel, than any of it's contemporaries. It's really quite feel-good stuff, rather more like Strictly in tone than the singing competitions.

Terrible for The Voice. Embarrassment is going to be acute at the BBC, and indeed you would think at Talpa too. Surgery needed.

BGT does have an inherent advantage in that the variety of the acts make them much more distinctive and memorable.

Having said that, The Voice does seem one-tone, even in comparison to other singing contests. The guys wear trilby hats, guitar and sing in endless falsetto - the girls gesticulate and add 14 superfluous notes to each lyric. Those acts exist on XF too (and I don't think they're any more talented - perhaps less so), but there's a variety of groups, ages and token novelty acts to break up the monotony. From watching in full for the first time last night, I think TV producers have realised this now - and so are trying way to hard to fix things with over-elaborate songs / arrangements and awful personal VT's. Which are making things worse.

The most disturbing aspect for bosses is the number of things they can't fix week-to-week. If I was Danny Cohen, I think all I would do for next week is just lop 20 minutes off the running time and tell them to hurry the hell up - whittle through judges comments, chop down the VT's, stop with the inane questions and speed the whole thing up. And get Reggie out front. Aside from that, they're going to have to tough the next few weeks out and see where on earth the show lands in the numbers- then they've got a chance at fixing something for next year. Presuming that a reasonable number of people are willing to sample once more... which, to be fair, they did in the US after a reasonably steep S1 drop off (not this steep). But they did still have a supportive press and a Superbowl...

Woefully off topic, but I think I managed to eek a ratings point out at the end there... ”

I agree. The contestants do seem to have this desperation to make the songs as indistinct as possible by using wild vocals.
The problem is that TV faces criticism if it fails and would no doubt face more if it changes and apes BGT or XF. Certainly they could sing more mass audience friendly songs and sing without practicing their scales while they do it. There will be a huge list of possible changes-but what will they do?

You said it Ken, you really think <6m for The Voice final against mediocre ITV1 opposition on June 2nd after the England friendly? If you are within 2m of the true figure I will applaud you. Kylie is singing live on the final.
