If anyone takes the Daily Mail seriously, they need their heads testing to be honest. It's the usual bile they spout at every given opportunity and I doubt it'll hurt Danny Cohen in the slightest. The Voice is getting bad press at the moment but it can still recover - a 6m base is a healthy one to have and is definitely something to work with.

As for last night - ITV, if you air filler you'll get filler ratings. It could be argued Dirty Britain did well to build on such a disastrous lead in. Both EastEnders and Emmerdale strugggled in figures but their shares are decent enough; the light nights are really starting to hurt shows now. I've only just got home from a night out and didn't need a coat outside despite the fact it's past midnight.

Silk did well in the 9pm slot; Embarrassing Bodies looks low but I'm not sure how it usually does share wise. Hollyoaks is definitely low, though - it should be getting above that.

Are you seriously still using that one line by Holly Willoughby, which was probably an ad-lib anyway, as the entire reason to slag off The Voice? You make it sound like they made it the top story on the news and arranged a fly-past. They didn't even put out a press release.

I presume you had the same problem when Top of the Pops used to start with "It's still number one, it's Top of the Pops", and when The Price is Right used to start with "It's Britain's biggest game show"? It's the same exact thing. And nobody said The Voice was better than The X Factor, they said people might choose to enter The Voice because now they saw it they preferred the way they did things.

And The Voice was at number one when Holly said it. The BBC gets enough rubbish flung at it, why shouldn't they blow their own trumpet? One of the big problems with BBC light entertainment in recent years has been its lack of ambition.

Hard to say, as there'll still be plenty of weeks without football on Tuesdays, and they won't be able to run any continuing series there because they'll keep on being interrupted, so it'll be a right bran tub. And they don't have the huge number of repeatable dramas they had ten years ago.

ITV commissions their first daytime drama in four years:

“ITV1’s first daytime drama in nearly four years will be an innovative police procedural from the indie and key creatives behind The Bill.

The broadcaster has commissioned a 20 x 60-minute run of True Crime, which will be recorded at The Bill’s former home at Wimbledon Studios and will focus on two police officers tackling cases inspired by real events. It was created by Paul Marquess – who executive produced The Bill for three years – who will oversee the show through Newman Street, a newly created drama division at FremantleMedia UK.

True Crime will be shot in a documentary style and will contain footage made to look like CCTV to give it an authentic edge. The drama will aim to provide an insight into the working methods of experienced detectives during investigations.

German lessons
Although FremantleMedia UK chief executive Sara Geater would not go into detail on any of the real storylines or production techniques, she said the show would “learn lessons” from the group’s German indie UFA. The firm uses “honed down” production methods to make popular daily soaps, such as Das Erste’s Forbidden Love.

Alison Sharman, ITV’s director of factual and daytime, hinted that some elements of True Crime will be unscripted and said that it would be ambitious in scale despite “challenging daytime budgets”.

“It’s very confident and sassy, and there’s definitely some grit in the oyster,” said Sharman, who ordered the show after it was piloted by Newman Street earlier this year.

“We tested the pilot with our viewer panel and we came back with positive responses from younger and older viewers. We know that drama repeats fare well on ITV1 in the afternoon, but there’s the opportunity to do something fresh and challenging.”

The first series will be stripped on ITV1 in an afternoon slot later this year and was co-commissioned by Katy Thorogood, the broadcaster’s commissioner for factual and daytime. The executive producer is Marquess, while Steve Hughes (The Bill, Hollyoaks) and Darren Fairhurst (Shameless) are the co-creators and writers.

Newman Street will become the sixth “label” in the FremantleMedia UK stable, sitting alongside the likes of Thames, which makes The X Factor, and factual entertainment brand Boundless. Geater said a drama division had been “lacking” from the company’s portfolio and installing Marquess as managing director was sensible given his experience on shows such as The Bill.

He was most recently employed by Lime Pictures, where he series produced Hollyoaks, and will have the job of creating “great, returning, profitable” drama series. Geater also said that FremantleMedia UK has the ambition to create another drama label, focusing more on high-end international co-productions. It would go up against the likes of Left Bank Pictures and Kudos Film and Television, although the plans are at an early stage.

ITV1’s last daytime drama was The Royal Today, which was axed after 50 episodes amid budget cuts in 2008. ITV cancelled Talkback Thames-produced The Bill in 2010 after 26 years on air.”

Not quite. It was the 5th showing on the ITV network, and only the 2nd showing on ITV1.

Lewis doesn't seem to be working in the Wednesday slot. That's only 0.3m above the repeat that aired on a Sunday a couple of weeks back. It's already been recommissioned so it won't have any long term impact as they'll repeat it to good numbers, but they might want to look at how these 2 hour dramas are scheduled in the future.

The Apprentice really isn't going well this year. Last night's episode was down a whopping -25% vs the same episode last year. It hasn't caught fire this year at all, and from what I've seen it hasn't been very good.

It really hasn't. It's funny coming on here and seeing a show that's yet to TX dismissed as a crap reality show when this year's series of The Apprentice is probably the dullest of any reality show I've seen since Big Brother 4.

Even the double firing last night didn't reignite my interest because I didn't really care who got fired. And that's a big problem. No wonder they are burying the 'Why I Fired Them' show in a late Saturday night slot.

BBC One has a prank show lined up for next year to take the former Total Wipeout slot:

Endemol’s Initial is producing Secret Service, a 6 x 40-minute series expected to air in 2013. The family-friendly comedy series involves Hammond and his team being sent on missions by members of the public. The team will undertake a variety of tasks such as proposing to someone, trying to impress teenagers and getting back at friends in absurd and ridiculous ways – while secretly filming them.

BBC1 controller Danny Cohen and controller of entertainment commissioning Mark Linsey ordered the series, which is being series produced by Jake Cardew and executive produced for the BBC by Mirella Breda.

Richard Osman, Catherine Lynch, Andy Rowe, Richard Hammond and Initial creative director Nick Samwell-Smith created the series, with the latter describing it as “great family viewing on Saturday nights.”

Total Wipeout will run for one more series towards the autumn before being dropped after four series on BBC1. One series of Winter Wipeout has also been shown on the channel. The gameshow is recorded on a massive assault course set in Argentina and involves contestants taking on extreme obstacles in the hope of winning £10,000. It continues to air around the world.”

I haven't bothered with it for the most part this year. I watched the first couple of episodes but gave up, and the snippets I've seen since have done nothing to change my mind.

So far this series is averaging 6.33m, down -15% on the 7.41m that last year's first 10 episodes averaged. The declines have been getting wider of late though, as whilst last year the ratings gradually grew over the series, that hasn't happened this year, and the last few episodes have actually rated lower than the first few did. The final is going to be way off last year's and unlike other reality/entertainment shows, I can't think of much they can do to revamp it.

Terrible candidates this year is the main problem but also I think they could do with varying the tasks. They've had the same tasks for years now. The casting is key, I gave up after two episodes. Very bland individuals, nobody I cared about or with anything interesting and/or different about them.
The same thing happened a few years back, where I gave up after 2/3 weeks and the next year it was good again. Considering how terrible it it this year, I find the ratings staggeringly good.

I think 733k might've been Neighbours' lowest ever 5.30pm rating. Hollyoaks bounced back a little bit from Tuesday's all-time low.

By the way, Tuesday's Holby City averaged 4.69m (23.6%).

The Apprentice just depends on who they have on the show.
You can tell the editor is in there trying to save things!

Some years it'll just do 'okay' and others it'll grow, no point discussing much beyond the fact they can get different candidates next year!

Your Fired is the best bit of this series - I wouldn't be surprised if its adding to some of its longevity.

The Apprentice is still a flagship show, I seem to be out on Wednesday evenings so I watch it on VOD. I would like to see the AI figures, just because viewers have dropped doesn't mean it is suddenly rubbish. The tasks are repetitive, but the production values are good.

When I have time later I will compare BARB officials to get a truer picture. I expect the 7 day ratings to be closer than overnight comparisons are.

Its not very BBC'ish to be playing pranks on people. Someone might get upset. I'd think they will steer away from the elaborate Game For A Laugh pranks that incredibly are now 30 years old
