It'll be hardware chip only that, I'm afraid. The big manufacturers (Sony, Toshiba, Panasonic, Pioneer, JVC) who developed the DVD standard all support region coding fully, rather than paying lip-service to it like the "lesser" brands do, with their remote hacks. This means that you do actually have to modify the hardware to multi-region crack them.

That said, there are a lot of places that do this very professionally now - check out upgradeheaven.co.uk or techtronics.com.

A few people have had bad experiences with Techtronics so I would not want to recommend them without first checking on delivery times and availability.

http://www.upgradeheaven.co.uk or http://www.techtronics.com will both have supporters and those who've had probs.

Personally I used Tecthronics and have spoke to their technical support without any hitches.

The panasonic A100 was, if i remember correctly, the first ever DVD player panasonic released in this country, and any hacks that worked for that (and I think I remember the hack in question) are very unlikely to work on any current player.

I'm certain that any hack will involve at least a firmware alteration if not a complete hardware mod, which can only really be done by a specialist (that said, it's not too expensive to have it done, especially if you buy the player pre-modded).
