Do you think that Rihanna could beat Mariah Carey's record and have 18 #1 records?

Mariah currently holds the record for most #1's on the Billboard Hot 100 with 18 and Rihanna has 11 #1's so far. With Rihanna's career seemingly only beginning to take off recently, do you think she could overtake Mariah?

At the rate she releases singles she could probably do it by 2015

Yes I think so. Remember Rihanna is still very young - isn't she like 23 or 24?

So at the rate she's going she could match/beat that record in the next 4 or 5 years (maybe even less)

I know some people who would like to erase them from history but Mariah Carey does not hold the record for most Billboard US#1 hit singles, the record belongs to a beat combo from Liverpool, England whom between 1964-1970 (when they split up) amassed 20 US#1 hit singles.

I think the OP meant the most number one singles by a solo artist and female.

Rihanna definitely stands a chance as she's still young and has a strong career at the moment.

At the rate she churns out albums and singles most likely unless she burns out and does a Britney of course.

It's possible. She has 11 chart toppers so far, doesn't she? Well, she's close. But in order to get to 18 #1 singles, it will take her 3-4 more albums to do so.

There's no doubt about it if she continues to record more songs like she does, depends on how many albums she releases within the next few years to be honest

Bear in mind though, recent chart changes have made the chart more slow-paced, which makes it harder for songs to get to #1 in general, and recent chart changes also favour urban and alternative music and hurt pop music slightly. So I think it'll be more difficult for Rihanna to get #1s in the future, unless she adopts a more alternative sound (which I doubt will happen), but we'll see. I still think it's possible.

Also, if Mariah releases a new album she could also extend her number 1s also. That said, with the speed Rihanna releases new album she is in with a chance of doing so, but so many of Rihannas hits are so unforgettable 12 months after release.

Mariah's number #1s are all well-deserved, though. She wrote them all, bar 1 that was a cover (and not even intended to be a single). Rihanna doesn't write her music and to be honest it's not even of quality...
Rihanna will probably surpass her eventually, as will someone like Katy Perry. There will come a time when even the Beatles are passed, and that will be a dark day. The Beatles, Elvis, even 80% of Mariah's #1 singles come from a time when the digital downloads didn't exist, it was a lot harder to get a #1. It was all about Radio, and since Rihanna is basically all over it and a HUGE downloadable artist, there really is no stopping her.

Mariah's 11th #1 single was Always Be My Baby, if I'm correct. That was in 1996, from her fifth studio album. Rihanna's 11th #1 was We Found Love, from her sixth studio album, so it's actually taking her longer to get them. Also, if it was this easy for artists to get #1s, Elvis, Mariah, the Beatles would all be beaten by now. Artists never usually make it to that height without having some sort of career meltdown... Whitney found crack, Elvis (though got very high up) died, even Mariah stopped at 15 and was thought to never be heard of again. I predict a meltdown up in here for Rihanna.

Or competition from younger, emerging artists that will block her pathway to the number 1 spot.

I know I may get slammed for this, but at the time werent the Beatles fairly unique in what they were doing? Plus their time was at a time when there were a lot less distractions in life and music was still something you would appreciate just for itself, not necessarily as just background noise while you got on with something else. I am a Beatles fan though and I have a great appreciation for a lot of their work.

A lot of dance music's popularity nowadays I think stems partly from the recession and the fact that clubs and bars are much more widely available and cheaper than venues in which you could go and see indie bands. But it'll circle around anyway in two or three years.

As for Rihanna and Mariah, I'm not a massive Mariah fan but she appealed to what the market wanted I guess.

Rihanna's 11 number ones...I think she's cheating to class them as her own. Weren't a lot of them songs in which she featured as a guest singer?

Excluding Live Your Life and Love The Way You Lie where she features as a guest artist, she only has 9 number 1's in the US.

And furthermore, what about the singles of her own that were #1 that featured guest artists?

We Found Love features Calvin Harris
S and M features Britney Spears
What's My Name features Drake
and Umbrella features Jay-Z

So really, as a completely solo act she only has 5

She has done well though. I disagree with posters that say she should take a break, she should grab as much as she can while she's still flavour of the month, and then retire rich at 30 haha

That's true, but Mariah also collaborates a lot, and also had a lot of remixes help her to get to #1, so her and Rihanna are kind of level in that respect.

In my opinion, there's nothing wrong with them using remixes, and in my opinion, a song getting to #1 counts as a #1 for all the credited artists.

I agree about the last bit aswell. I don't think Rihanna should take a break at all. I'm a big fan of her, but I'm aware that it'll hurt her career if it does. Rihanna's producers and songwriters are very talented people and have spent the past 12 months making some excellent tunes for her next album, I don't know why Rihanna should take a break, what's the point? She doesn't make the music, so she'll just be sitting around at home for a couple of years doing nothing.

I do think a break of perhaps 2-3 months between each album would be good, but her going away for 2 years is just a good way to kill her career imo (that's probably why it's always the people that hate her that suggest she takes a break ).

I don't know about you but I don't spend time judging people on their looks and checking their photos on Twitter.

Rihanna releases music like she's already been given a due date of when it's all going to end. If she put all her singles and featured singles together the number is ridiculously high definately quantity over quality.

Wrong, wrong, wrong. The big difference here is that Mariah writes her collaborations and creates her remixes too. I swear no one gives her enough credit as a writer and producer.
Rihanna does nothing.

Bold is ones that had actual popular remixes:
Italics are collabs (that she wrote):
Underlines are covers:

Vision of Love
Love Takes Time
Some Day
I Don't Wanna Cry
Emotions
I'll Be There
Dreamlover
Hero
Fantasy
One Sweet Day
Always Be My Baby
Honey
My All

Heartbreaker
Thank God I Found You
We Belong Together
Don't Forget About Us
Touch My Body

What these women have in common is an inability to keep their clothes on in their music videos.

What they don't have in common is vocal ability. Rihanna can't disappear fast enough for me.
