Hi there,

before I splash out mega money on a Plasma TV at Xmas, can anyone give me the pro's and con's of one as to buying a rear projection TV.

No, that's cobblers.

Pros: sexy, slim, wall-hangable, great picture, viewing angle not restricted like some rear-pros.

Cons: still comparatively expensive for a decent one - you'd get more inches per pound with a rear projected job.

I'd put my money on a plasma.

I'd get a projector set up rather than a plasma...

Plasmas are big, heavy and not that dependable in their picture quality...

And screen burn is always a threat.

3 years lol Put it this way airports have had them for years, running 24 hours a day non stop and they still work perfectly (well they will have screen burn but it goes with the job). No one actually knows how long they will last, but we will find out when they start to fail in airports and shopping centres all over.

Well burn should be a thing of the past soon with the new systems that move the picture around the screen.

Pro - sexy, great picture (CRT better), no geometry issues (beats CRT), space saver (beats CRT and RP), did I say sexy, good viewing angle (beats CRT and to my knowledge both RP and LCD) and you don't have to watch it in the dark (so beats PJ).

Con - when people come roundall they do is talk about how sexy your TV looks

If you say so...

But they are prone to problems and hideously heavy...

It does weigh a bit but try picking up a 42 inch CRT or RP

I have noticed that quite a few of them are not flat.

cheers all, well that about doea it for me then.....Plasma.

what are these projector TV's like?
I take it they are the type that you see in Pubs and Clubs?

They seem OK for pubs but I'm not too sure about houses. (maybe differing types?)

You have to decide what is important, Plasma are thin and look great on a wall, they even look good on a pedestal stand
However if you have the space then a DLP projection panel which matches the resolutions of a High Def Plasma could be considered.
The Sagem AXIUM HTD501DLP can be seen in some Comet stores at around £2000. If you are not concerned about HD resolutions then there are plenty of cheaper rear projection screens on the market whih have very good pictures these days for very little money but they are big and bulky.

Screen burn isnt a problem as long as you take care.

For the first hundred hours of viewing, make sure you don't watch too much 4x3 tv with black bars at the sides...you can zoom or stretch to avoid this.

Also, dont know if youll be using it for gaming, but again, avoid have the same image on screen for too long.

These guys are highly recommended and have a Panasonic TH42 PWD6 for £1580 (inc vat and delivery).

Let us know what you decide!
Ive got a Panny plasma and have never regretted buying it.
