Hi all

I was going to make my own rolling icing for my son's birthday cake and dye it while making it. I'mnow running out of time and if I can by-pass the making of the icing then I will.

My Q is this, can you dye premade icing with food dye. I want to do a star wars cake and I want the icing black (outer space). Is this possible and how much should I use to get it jet black??

Thanks in advance!

DQ

It's very difficult to get icing jet black - the amount of colour you have to add to the icing is huge and it messes with the consistency. I've always been told to buy black icing as it's much easier...

Julian Graves stock different coloured icings

I agree that colouring white icing black is pretty pointless.

I've had a brainwave...I've bought some chocolate icing and will use the dye on that. Surely starting with a dark base colour will give better results with less colouring!?!
