Facebook's unprecedented dominance of the internet, and of life in general, is creeping me the hell out. It's like we're not "allowed" to have nothing to do with.

Well, since it seems the tech people at Digital Spy have screwed up the logging on for Opera users and aren;t trying to sort it out (I'm only doing htis through Internet Explorer because it's the only way I can - it's not a web browser I use normally) then 'll say good bye to Digital Spy.

Goodbye.

Um this new option means you can post on articles on the main pages NOT USING FACEBOOK whereas you couldnt before so it should please the anti fb crowd, not annoy you.

bit over the top, why not just use chrome takes less than a min to install and is superfast and easiest browser to use?

I know i sound like "defender of DS" but really some of you are annoyed/pee'd off over stuff that isnt even right, i.e. the FB thing.

Meh. It's just what Opera users do. No-one else understands it. FF, Chrome, IE - they all have their supporters and detracters and we all like to mix it up. But Opera - Christ on a crutch those users are in a world of their own. A small world, but one of their own nonetheless.

I guess 'Opera' by name operatic by nature. Over the top and incomprehensible to everyone else

lol, ive never used Opera I went from IE to Firefox then Chrome. Chrome for me is by far the simpliest & fastest with no ridiculous toolbars and addons i dont need totally customable.

I log in and the screen goes back to the original page without showing me as logged in, I still see the log in to my account line, if I click on log in again it shows me as logged in.

I agree about the facebook scurge. Imagine if it turned out you couldnt log in anywhere without a facebook account, compulsory like chip and pin cards, no cheques anymore. Or trying just to get a balance or ask a questuon when ringing the bank you need an online password or pin. I feel sorry for older people and pensioners.

I was blissfully happy when I could walk into a shop and simply order a coffee without a dozen supplementary questions. I never got bored when I only had 4 or 5 tv channels, there was other stuff to do and I never had a problem deciding what food to eat but it actually annoys me now to have a dozen different 'coffee experiences' or scrolling through "13 channels of s*** on the TV to choose from" or even a "choice of culinary delights from around the world". I'm not against progression per se but I will be unsurprised if the almighty Facebook account becomes a necessity rather than a choice in the next few years. Then the choice will be gone and I will rue it.
Google, Amazon and PayPay will become the new banks and Facebook will become the portal to the Internet through which you will have to pass like entering a Haven holiday camp through the arcades. I'm glad I enjoyed the unbridled Internet of the 90's before business discovered it. Rant over

You'll find me in the chippy with a mug of tea watching BBC1.

While i understand that

The people who are moaning about "having" to use FB to use DS are actually wrong. DS have made it so you DONT have to use FB to log in, and can use your forum ID to post on articles something you couldnt do before without FB so in effect they have removed FB from the equation for those who dont want it. Which really means those people who have moaned about using FB here havent really bothered to look/read/understand what DS have done, just assumed.

What I don't understand (well, one of the many things)........why does DS have anything to do with FB at all, they're different sites...........for signing in, for posting on articles (whatever that means). Why are people even mentionning Facebook in a thread about signing in to DS ?

What's Facebook got to do with it ?

It hasnt which is my whole point. No one has to know you have facebook you dont need it to post here anymore, so for those whining about it invading DS now using it etc clearly havent understood whats been changed. Before they needed FB to post on main articles, now they dont but start whining about "having to use FB" makes NO sense.

So.......why are half the posts on this thread about Facebook and DS...........not about Mumsnet and DS or The Post Office Site and DS or Ebay and DS

Why Facebook ?............what has Facebook got to do with DS Log In ?.........either now or in the past or in the future

OMG.
Are you being deliberately obtuse?
For the final time.

People were moaning about having to use FACEBOOK to post here. They got it wrong, they dont have to.

No........I'm still not getting it

If people are moaning about 'having' to use FB to post here then it kind of assumes that you can use FB to post here

That's what I don't get............

I can't use DS to post on the BBC site or the Daily Mail site.............how can or could people use FB to post here ?

When you login on the main pages you can choose to log in using either your FB ID or your fORUM ID. Before you could only comment on main articles using your FB ID. You cannot post in the forums using your FB ID, only on main articles on the main site.

The change is this _ you could not post using a forum ID on the main articles, now you can_.

You can still use your FB login to post on main articles, that hasnt changed. You cant use your FB login to post in the forums, that hasnt changed.

I hope im explaining it ok if not perhaps Tom Miller or someone could LOL.

Pet1986, I know what you're saying and you're right that DS have actually added a level of functionality or 'another option', not taken anything away but while not technically correct I think a lot of people just don't like the idea of DS being 'integrated' in any way with FB. There is a feeling that sites have to go along with FB and offer the option to log in using FB but a lot of people, me included, just don't want to link two separate Internet spaces together. I don't want to even have the option to check my bank records while at the doctors for instance but some people will. Given FB's record on privacy I wouldn't want them to have any link, however tenuous, to my other online activities.
I know I can keep the two sites separate at the moment and not log in via FB but I have a creeping suspicion that at some point in future I will no longer have that option. That's what I don't like.

It looks as though it's confusing some people. I've seen a few FM's who appear under a new name (their real name, in other words their Facebook name) whilst they still have a separate DS name. I sincerely hope that the admin is keeping an eye on this as no-one should be penalised for having two accounts when it's DS that has caused this muddle

i think ds owe me a job! lol

and Tess that only applies to forum IDS and you can still only use your forum ID in the forums not your FB one

So let me get this straight: I should start using a web browser that I have never used and one which lots of installs of different programmes foists upon me and stop using a browser I have used for over 10years and which has always worked perfectly well just because a forum site does an upgrade which overnight stops me logging on via a browser that has happily allowed me to log on to that site for years?

I don;t really think that's the best solution...

eta..in reply to Pet1986

I was going to link you back to a post where someone was claiming they were now signed in under their FB name, rather than their DS name.....it's gone....

Now I'm confused

They were talking about the front page articles not the forum.

You can only use your FB ID to post comments on main pages not in the forums.

You can use your FORUM ID to do both.
