Minecraft on the 360

I had a quick look and couldn't see another thread so thought I'd start one.

Anyone else get this yesterday? I'm a nerd and watch a lot of videos on youtube by certain commentators who sometimes play minecraft so thought I'd give it a go.

Pretty addictive! I spent an hour last night just mining trying to find coal and iron.

It's so simple but I love it!

Great game. I have it on the PC too but I spend much more time using my xbox for games so I'll be on the 360 version more.

I spent a large portion of yesterday afternoon mining out a space large enough to house an underground tree farm. It can only house four trees and the process of making the space large is incredibly monotonous but I love it anyway!

This Minecraft game seems to be everywhere these days. I have watched a few YouTube videos on it and all you seem to do is dig.

Is that it or is there a story/purpose to it all?

'The core gameplay revolves around construction. The game world is essentially made of cubes arranged in a fixed grid pattern which represent different materials, such as dirt, stone, various ores, water, and tree trunks. While the players can move freely across the world, objects and items can only be placed at fixed locations relative to the grid. The player can gather these material blocks and place them elsewhere, thus potentially creating various constructions.'

It's basically a sandbox game where you create things out of substances you've dug up, and at night zombies and things come out and attack you so you either fight them off or build yourself a house.
It's hard to explain it without making it sound boring!

Taken from the Minecraft review from this very website:

Quote:
Which brings up another point, one that makes Minecraft Xbox 360 Edition very difficult to review: it is not finished. The version of Minecraft available at launch on Xbox Live is comparable to where the PC version's beta was at almost exactly a year prior. Many features, such as a slew of crafting items, inhabited villages, various creatures and the PC's significant adventure update, are all absent.

I just tried to watch a 22 minute Dai Ling Ping Minecraft youtube vid. I made it to the five minute mark. As soon as Dal said "bit f**king boring, innit?" i agreed and switched it off.

Looks like something my girlfriend would play on facebook.

Tried the demo and I dont get the game either. It seems one of those games you have to spend alot of time on like those facebook games.

Plus the graphics are crap.

Agreed, the graphics are actually quite lovely.

Game is superb, in a strange way it reminds me how I felt the first time I played Hunter on Amiga. It's one of the best sandbox experiences I've had with a game. Creativity is not imperative to your enjoyment like some other creation-type games (a good thing in my case), imagination is.

Graphics do not = a good game.

Minecraft has wonderful aesthetics, which is part of the appeal.

I've been playing it for a good while on my mac. Love it ! But I had no plans to get it on the Xbox till all of a sudden all the people I play online with got it. Had no idea they were even aware of it ! It's enjoyable with friends but basic.

I had another quick go tonight to give it another chance and I do see how you could spend hours playing it but to me it's one of those games where you have to have a lot of patience too. Not something you can just have a quick go at.

Reminds me of THIS I had in the 80's/90's when I did have the patience to build stuff but the stuff I built wasn't very good.

I also think its a bit steep at 1600 points when it doesnt have all the features of the pc version but that will change with updates.

I bet it will be on some sort of deal or the week when kids break up for the summer hols.

If you're watching a video of someone playing a game they don't enjoy, you're going to have a bad time. Try watching Gamechap, Haat Films or Yogscast playing it.

The game is ****ing awesome, you pay once and get shitloads of updates, here's what was added since I bought the PC version

- Enderdragon boss
- The End dimension
- Endermen
- Underground Strongholds (Containing libraries)
- Enchanting (Add spells to your weapons to give them special abilities)
- Pre-built villages
- Villagers to populate the villages
- Zombie sieges on villages
- Buildable Iron Golem robots to protect villagers
- Pre-built mineshafts hidden underground
- A whole jungle biome
- A tameable Ocelot who populates the jungle
- Wolves (also tameable)

Upcoming changes
- Merging of Multiplayer and Singleplayer to make it work more like the Xbox version (They are currently tweaking this in the latest snapshots)
- Writeable books (Very useful for crafting adventures and expanding lore)
- Cocoa leaves for the jungle biomes, to make it so you can make cookies
- A mod API, to make it easier for user made mods to be put in games
- Suggested texture packs

Mojang are probably the best developers currently out there, simply because, they care about the people who buy their game, ever after they have bought it.

Here's a few screenshots of my Xbox 360 game anyway

My home, complete with house and farm

My pet wolf

And then here's my PC server that me, my brother and two friends play on

Town, complete with castle, Skyrim inspired Jarl hut, and Nordic houses

Lakeside, inspired by American lake towns

Bridge to new area, echo city, this area was inspired by the houses you can see in WoW when flying between Ironforge and Stormwind

As you exit the tunnel following the bridge, there is a small market and a tourist cave, inspired by White Scar caves in Yorkshire

and me calling my friend an idiot while they don't notice

See this is what Minecraft is, and although some of those pictures are from the PC, what you see there is perfectly possible on the Xbox from hard work.

Minecraft is as good as your mind can make it, to some people it will just be a blocky game with no point, to some people it will be about a lakeside town, which is ready to be populated with characters and lore. It'll be a story about a bunch of adventurers trekking across lands to reach the End so that they can slay the dragon who is sending the evil Endermen into their world.

To others, it will be a place where they can build their dream home, the location of their favourite TV show or even build the USS Enterprise D. There's nothing holding you back, except your own imagination.

Yes I rambled, but by god this is a good game.

Any hope at all of this appearing on the PS3?

I've played Mindcraft of the old laptop and quite enjoyed it, but you need friends really to get the most from it. As I only have friends on the PS3, MC on the PC is, well, boring.

I've never thought of Mindcraft as a game - more like creative software. If you have the imagination and the time, it can be very rewarding to create something that your actually proud of.

Would love to see this on the PS3.
