Kind of a pointless topic but i'll answer anyway I think he is gay , and i think this camp act is NOT an act , it's his real self. Nobody can act that way non stop and not be gay.

David gay? Next you'll be saying Simon is, too

Duncan Norvell has been mentioned several times as some kind of 'proof' of something. In actual fact, many people, from Danny la Rue onwards, who act a little bit gay, usually are.

David is not gay. He is an actor and loves playing up to the part. He doesn't even register on my gaydar.

He has said that he is effeminate in the interview quoted in an above post, if I have read it correctly. What does he mean? I don't see him as particularly effeminate myself, but he does.

Effeminate means unmanly, womanish, according to the Oxford Compact Dictionary and Thesaurus. Similar words given include camp, effete, girlish, sissy, unmanly, weak. I don't say he is any of this - it is what you will find in the above book.

David said he is 'effeminate'. He did not say he is acting the part of an effeminate man.

And btw Wizard, I am certain that at least a couple of 'all your straight friends' are not as straight as they profess to be. There are certain scenarios, alas, which ensure that non-straight feelings of sexuality are totally repressed. These situations are usually down to peer pressure and the feeling that one cannot express the full extent of your sexuality in the company of your friends. It is actually a very dangerous situation both in terms of damage done to the self in repressing the sexuality; and potentially to others in that the over-compensation to prove oneself 'straight' in a mob situation can lead to verbal and sometimes physical assaults on anyone perceived by the gang mentality to be 'a bit queer'. In fact the most common symptom of repressed homosexuality is a fixation on the subject and frequent accusations/ epithets referring to the sexuality of other people.

Anyway, here's the DID text:

Kirsty Young asks the comedian outright: "Have you ever had a relationship with a man?" Walliams responds: "No."

Young presses: "Do you think you will?" With unhesitating candour, Walliams says: "If I fell in love with a man then, yeah, I wouldn't say that could never happen. I think about it; because I am effeminate I've always thought about it, 'Am I gay?'

"And then, I so love being with women, and I so love women's bodies and all that. I think, well no, I can't be. But sometimes I think it would just be simpler if I was, because everyone thinks I am. I'm quite camp, but no, I don't think I am. If I was gay, I would just get on with it. But definitely I love women, I love being around women, I find them incredible and intoxicating, and I've never had that feeling I get with women with a man."

The Bafta award-winning star believes the press is obsessed with his sexuality partly because camp and homosexual characters feature prominently in Little Britain - its co-creator, Matt Lucas, is gay.”

^^^This is the post with the interview I mentioned.

I think he should have the last word on the subject and he seems to have summed it all up very well. The effeminate part is still a bit of a puzzle, but everything else slots into place for me.

Btw,relating to the above, Gok Wan seems to like women's bodies, and I may be wrong but I believe he is gay?

What's always baffled me about Walliams - and Little Britain - is that it's basically the same joke stuck on repeat. It whiffs strongly of the Emperor's New Clothes.

And I'm not surprised that some gay men find it offensive. It's great to see homosexuality being portrayed in mainstream media, but the representation in this case is camp to the level of caricature and an aggressive homosexuality of unwanted advances. Is that really what gay people want to see?

I'm not gay and therefore am certainly not going to take offence on their behalf; but I find the whole thing tired, obvious, over the top and nauseatingly repetitive.

IMO. Your assessment of SC is very acurate..but he can afford a lifestyle with all the benefits of a close relationship, but without the baggage

Then hes fooled you...In his long & talented career, before his marriage he was romantically linked with Patsy Kensit, Abi Titmuss, Emily Scott, which speaks for itself.
The camp stuff first appeared when he appeared in productions with Matt Lucas(Long before `Little Britain`)...Thats not to say hes taking that image a bit to far.

taking aside David Walliams specifically - there are a hell of a lot of people in this thread who think that there is such a thing as "acting gay" like being gay means you have to be one particular way. By extention any self declared gay man who doesn't act like David Walliams must be deluding themselved and be secretly straight! Might come as a shock to half of the Friday night population of canal street!

Kudos to everyone who's pointed out that camp and gay are not the same thing

I think most people know the difference between camp and gay and that they can and do exist both separately and together.

David Walliams isn't always camp. He's been on interviews in programmes such as The Book Club which many will have seen/interviews with his mother and so on. I don't think there needs to be a great dispute about this ad nauseum.

Yes, he has women friends and a wife. Nothing new there either.

The curious thing to me is that he says he is 'effeminate'. No-one seems interested in talking about that so far apart from me and the poster quoting him in the first place. Just to clarify - effeminate is not the same as camp - or gay for that matter, although again of course they can exist together as well as separately. It - camp - is given in the Thesaurus as a relative word, not as a Dictionary definition of effeminate. I have already given the Dictionary meaning as womanish, unmanly.

What does he mean? It is a curious thing to say, as he does not appear effeminate.

However, David's 'act' is all about having unrequited sexual feelings for Simon. So 'pretend gay' rather than camp, surely?
