Huawei Ascend G300

I've just got this phone today and I have to say it is easily the best Android phone in it's price range, Huawei have skinned the OS but it's been done well with only the lock screen and launch bar changed (for the better IMO) it runs faster than the other phones available for around £100 and the screen is bright and sharp. For the money it's excellent value.

Have to agree its a great phone very fast with the new b888 rom installed without all the vodafone bloatware.

Only faults was very low loudspeaker volume but thats been fixed now, and its very slippery to hold (like a bar of soap).

Other than that its great and getting ICS update soon.

That looks to be a real bargain.

How did they fix the low volume?

I had a little Huawei phone when I lived in Portugal with a local sim fitted, not expensive and I'd leave it there when I came back to the UK, it was pretty basic but the speaker on it was really loud and the battery lasted ages, the only phone I've had that was anywhere near as good for music was a Sony Ericson a few years ago.

The first time I switched the phone on a notification popped up offering the software update and it downloaded OTA and installed itself in a matter of 3 or 4 minutes.
I'm impressed at how quickly Huawei acknowledged the fault and sorted out a fix (unlike certain better known manufacturers) and it also gives me faith that the forthcoming upgrade to Ice Cream Sandwich will be available as promised.

I would most definitely recommend this phone above all others in it's price range.

To upgrade the software...

Press the menu button then select Settings and scroll down to About phone
Online upgrade is the first option in that menu, click to check for updates and follow onscreen prompts. You do not need to connect to a computer to install this update but it is best done with WiFi turned on.

I just got one for the wife, I think it's better than my HTC Desire- and some of the menus are near identical (font etc). The update was there a an option in the menus for us.
Highly recomended.

Bump...

Has anyone actually noticed the bad video sound quality though? Any chance of an update (or could an update improve this)?

Very good phone. Only thing I didn't like was the hiss on my low impedance in ear headphones. Quickly fixed by adding an extension cable with volume control. Turn up the phone output, turn down the extension cable volume and hiss gone. This probably applies to most mobiles, I don't think the Ascend is any worse.

Sounds fantastic now.

Was reading about this phone yesterday. Think I might want it to replace my San Francisco but will wait until its not tied to vodafone. I managed to install a custom rom on my San Fran but I needed to in order to get rid of the bloatware. I would rather not have to do that again. Also I haven't been able to use viber for months since the last update and one reason is the rom.
The g300 seems to have what I want like iplayer and better battery life.

Well, good for £100 phone, even better than some you get for twice the price.

I remember people saying it was a timed exclusive with vodafone? Does anyone know when the exclusivity period runs out and which other networks/retailers will pick it up.

Might get an unlocked one if its not too much more than £100.
