Well, I'm going to make you feel a lot better for pointing out the significance of the song! I think I've officially crossed the line. Have been rewatching some of S2 and spotted two things that were probably not meant to mean anything. 1) One was Doc giving someone an injection (can't remember who) with Danny present (Danny was now a clear rival) saying "just a little prick" and I thought he glanced at Danny? Second scene was Doc just coming from green grocer and bumping into Louisa. Doc had three fruits/veggies in his hand - two spherical, one cylindrical - positioned in a way to possibly suggest interested genitals. Is there any way this could have an inside joke, or shall I just put myself in a time out? I promise I won't next juxtapose the Mayan calendar, the graphics on a Beatles album, and the Doc's remarks at the Castle!

You are spot on. I think I remember catching the prick reference. And as for the vegetables...I was roaring the first time I saw that scene. And I laugh every time I watch it. It HAD to be done on purpose.

I think they may be setting us up for the return, at least to a small degree, of the blood phobia. I see hints of it in DM's behavior toward Morwenna when she freaks out at needles. He's completely unsympathetic toward her and says, "Nonsense," when she tells him about it. No problem when it's anyone else.

DM wasn't at all sympathetic towards JP with his agrophobia either. It took AJ to pull him up.

My main worry about s6 is that MC has said he doesn't want to Pathologise -his word - DM. I took this to mean that he didn't want DM's personality to change. Is this the right interpretation?

I don't see why DM can't grow and change - to a certain extent - and compromise just like the rest of us have to do to successfully live with someone.

I think there are a lot of these private jokes, insider references, allusions to movies, etc. etc., dropped in there that we don't know the half of.

Remember the child named "Emily Braithwaite?" and Holly asking DM if he knew her friend "Johnny Bamford"? And I now think those onions that occasionally show up are a shoutout to a cameraman named Roger Onions (if that is indeed his name!). Anyway, good to know they're having fun whilst making this for us.

I think he meant that to give the Doc a pathology would mean to give him a diagnosis which would explain his behavior (like Aspergers for example). If he has a diagnosis, then there would be a cure. So he doesn't want to "cure" him. Aspergers probably isn't a good example but I use it because there has been speculation over the years that he might have that. But a diagnosis of a pathology could lead to a possible cure and that could lead to a change in his personality.

He said the writers are often trying to soften his character and they have to send the scripts back for rewrites. He wants to maintain his grumpiness or whatever you want to call it.

yes, well, sad to say, and I don't know who I think I am, but I get a little annoyed with the adorable and talented Martin Clunes when he trots out that line. He's willfully created a pathological character, for heaven's sake, with the help of a back story crafted by Minghellas, which is just ripe for dissection and analysis. And if his more "pathological" tendencies are not remediated, if not cured, then I don't really see what hope there is for putting his relationship with LG on a more stable footing-- at least without LG herself becoming a passive-aggressive doormat. So, grumpy all he wants WRT to patients and fellow denizens of PortWenn, but hopefully a tad more sensitive, open and less high-handed with Louisa!

We had our meetup group on Sunday. One of our members said Martin and Eleanor infantalized Louisa in series 5. She thinks Louisa just wanted to matter to them. She was diappointed in ep 8. She said their (LG + DM) personalities were different in that ep from the rest of series 5. She also expected a final scene with them walking into the surgery after the whole ordeal with Mrs. T. Our member wanted to see them at least start to talk. She also didn't think DM needed special kudos for driving the baby to sleep or helping with things because she said that is what the father is supposed to do in those situations.

I liked her thoughts about making Louisa helpless and taking away her ability to make her own decisions - the painting of the apartment, belittling her work (both E and DM do that), deciding on the name and the Christening, etc. Eleanor tried to tell her how to schedule the school timetable and at the end said "it's like you're a proper teacher" or something.

She didn't like the way Louisa went from a capable smart woman in previous series to someone who couldn't handle things. She didn't understand why she was so disorganized as the head teacher when she had been doing the job before. She said you can't just attribute it to "baby brain" and if she did have post partum problems that the Doc would have seen that because he would have recognized that.
