where no dog act before had won BGT ? Firstly, it was the best dog act, doing more sophisticated tricks in a more complex routine than any dog before. And also, the trainer, Ashleigh, had so much more appeal herself than any other trainer/co-performer. They really had a special quality compared to previous dog acts.

Because Jonathan's not as good a singer as Charlotte is.....in my opinion.

I thought Kate and Gin were just as good, if not better.

They won for a handful of reasons which all added up to a winning combination.

A cute looking dog

A young likeable girl (previous dog acts the 'trainer' has been much less likeable than the dog)

Inventive routines that were more than just a 'dancing' dog

Three different routines rather than regurgitation of a previous routine.

Ashleigh was as much part of the routine as the dog. They came across as very much a girl and her much loved pet rather than and 'act'

She made it look easy but getting a dog to do those things is incredibly difficult and takes hours and hours of work. The part where the dog is walking on its back legs is very difficult for a dog.

At the end of the day they were just an enormously likeable couple that people took to their hearts.

Most of the other acts will 'make it' anyway now they have had the BGT experience Ashleigh and Pudsey are never going to be huge world wide stars for years to come and half a million pounds will make a huge difference to Ashleigh's life I am sure.

He didn't match her singing ability last night.

You could be right because Kate and Gin weren't a big success after the show finished. They just made the odd appearance at Crufts and what not and that's it. Still, £500,000 is an absolute stack of cash for her. It MIGHT even be life changing if she's sensible with it and only touches the interest.

It already is! She could buy and furnish a really nice house without a mortgage if she didn't want to invest it - that's life changing for anyone let alone a 16 year old!

the dog was cute and fluffy. The girl was genuine and likeable.

And that picture of her squeezing him when they won their semi final endeared them to millions.

I would also add the production of their routine last night really was exceptional. Really above anything else seen before on the show

if you step back its not such a big deal winning a popularity contest on tv. The show is about the show, not the winner. BGT is about ads and ratings first and foremost.

This to me is what I endeared me to them. I can't stand acts (particularly singing acts) who sing their audition song (or do their audition routine) in the final.

If they'd had 2 dog acts in the final, to split the vote, they might not have won.

The dog won because 90% of the other acts should have been on x factor.

He was much better than her in all 3 appearances - she is an ordinary singer - he is fantastic

Pudsey lost my vote when he walked past the judges and failed to urinate on Cowell

Title of this topic " "So why did this dog act win"
Erm... Because the viewing public liked and enjoyed watching him so therefore they picked up the phone and voted .

They won because they were great! Well done to them, it must have taken a lot of hard work.

They were the most talented & entertaining act in the final & clearly deserved to win.
They were also the only real option for people who didn't want a singing or dancing act to win.

Also, previous dog acts have always been given a first-half slot in the final. Only one act (Twist & Pulse) has even got in the top 3 previously from being in the first half of the show.
Ashleigh originally tweeted that she was opening the final & it would have been interesting to see how close it would have been if that was where she had performed. I think they would probably still have had just enough votes anyway.
