If I swap to a phone with a micro sim , will orange allow me to keep my ordinary sim as back up for my secondary phone , or will they disable it ?

It's not a question of Orange "Allowing" anything. Mobile technology simply does not let the same number work on two SIMS. Therefore, when your number is activated on your new micro SIM, your old SIM becomes landfill. You can get a simple plastic adaptor for a few pence that will let you put your micro SIM into a conventional SIM slot.

Not quite true - you can have the same number on two SIMs, once had that with a call-out mobile. Due to shift changes, we couldn't always pass the phone on, so had to have two phones with the same number.

Its likely only available for specific business services.

Cutting a SIM to micro SIM size is one of those things that you only get one chance at!

Mess it up and you will be wishing you never owned a pair of scissors!

There are sim cutters that take the guesswork out of it:
