I love this two-parter. It is so atmospheric, with using the Dalek's incidental music, and being so other worldly. I also love this story as it's the first one to have a proper one-one confrontation between Doctor and adversary, something we've come accustomed to in the series but was rare back then.

It's a shame I knew the twist to this story before I watched it, but it does sort of work when you see it in hindsight. Not sure if I'd have sussed it or not, but with my suspicious mind, I probably would!

Off course this is Vicki's first story and it is one of the better ones to feature her. She didn't annoy me so much in this one(that 'pleasure' came later). I'm sure CHJ will have something to add to that!

Overall though, it's an enjoyable gem with few faults. Hartnell is on absolute top form in this and the I love the banter between The Doctor and Ian in this as well.

Yeah (referring to the twist) I think you could suss it but that again is in hindsight.

This is the first story I saw Vicky in and she is quite palatable in this one, I not a big fan of hers during her time on the show, but certainly don't dislike her though.

I like the eerie atmosphere and the some of the music/sound effects from memory seemed to be creepy and in keeping with the setting. Agree with the OP that it captures that other worldly really well, sparse and alien, sounds obvoius but some of the Doctor Who stories don't do this well at times.

I'll admit I find some of the Hartnell's drag a bit, even some of the shorter stories. But this is an enjoyable two-parter I would revisit without hesitation.

Maureen showed off her acting chops in this one, got to do that dramatic monologue telling her backstory.

The Doctor seemed very grandfatherly with Vicki, in a way more so than he ever did with Susan. Perhaps realising how much he missed Susan softened him a bit. But he was badass in the confrontation scene, just standing there with his back turned.

I still love watching that scene. The Doctor shows so much courage here, physically he's at a disadvantage which shows during the fight afterwards, but he still has the b******s to stand there and put the villain to rights.

I agree there's a nice touch between The Doctor and Vicki. I think as it is her debut she has to more to do , hence why she is less annoying in this.

a lovely 2 episode story but what I have always found fasinating about The Rescue, is how much Billy's Doctor has changed the lovable caring grandfather figure is a far cry from the bad tempered almost nasty Doctor we saw when the seris first started.

He's obviously missing Susan much more than he expected and is glad to have a sort of second chance with Vicki. He wasn't completely cold with Susan though, since we did see him hug her in The Brink of Disaster.

I watched ith this story recently and I really enjoyed it. It doesnt outstay its welcome and moves along .

I think Vicki gets a marvellous introduction,a bit gullible, vunerable but feisty. There's some nice dialogue with Barbara. Poor Sandy too !
.I actually think Vicki is quite refreshing in this story especially as Susan seemed so badly written at times. I dont know how she ends up but its a good start.

I didnt see the twist although the Commander was very shifty at times. A good story you can rewatch and enjoy.

Great little story. I love that scene at the end when Vicki tells the Doctor she's got no one, and he takes her under his wing. Maureen's great, IMO. A vast improvement on the whining Susan

I'm glad you enjoyed it. I enjoy the story a lot and as you say, it doesn't outstay it's welcome, anything more than 2 episodes and it may well have done.

If you get yourself a copy of the audio of The Myth Makers you can find out for yourself how Vicki ended up.

Ah Daveyboy I will get there eventually......Since the rewatch thread stopped i've been on my own rewatch ( or really new watch as most stories are unseen before).and carried on. Its been lovely getting to know the early stories and seeing the development of the characters. How did I ever know I would love Ian & Barbara. Watching the odd story really isn't the same experience .Have to see them get home.....Aiming to watch/ listen to all the Hartnells by Christmas somehow.

By the way your most recent threads are covering my DW era.I am sorely tempted to start up again with rewatching the Davison stories again. Did Keeper of Traken to Earthshock.
recently so very interested in everyone's comments
