Did I just hear that right? Alex Tudor said Alec Stewart was a better player than Boycott?

Sleeps did you hear the statement the owners put out? it sounded just like the one he got when they gave him the job.

But there again, what's the difference now between a vote of confidence and the sack

Nah - my use of "gotten" was just a case of lazy spelling on my part, in a post typed out late at night. Must do better!

But while I've never lived in North America, I do watch a fair bit of US sports and television programmes, with the adverts on there in my experience being more frequent and, more annoyingly from my point of view, often coming at random and unusual points in programmes. At least with British television (and talkSPORT too) you can almost set your watch by the commercial breaks - they typically go to them on the quarter hour. With North American programmes (not just live sport) I find that the timings of the breaks can often catch you by surprise and break up the flow of the programme which can be quite frustrating.

Seeing as we're on this subject, what's the frequency and general quality of commercials like in Japan/the Far East Tokyo?

Surely it's the previous three threads that were tainted Sleeper?

I've been listened to a fair bit of talkSPORT this afternoon and thought they really stepped up to the plate on a big day of football news.

What I heard of Hawksbee & Jacobs and their England squad announcement show with Alvin Martin and Darren Lewis (who I've started to warm to in his more recent appearances) was very good and I think Drive Time broke the news of Kenny Dalglish's sacking well, changed tact to it from the England news smoothly and from the bits I heard handled it more thoughtfully than I had expected them too.

Having said that the commercials on talkSPORT don't generally annoy me, that one for a solicitors firm (I won't give them a namecheck as they don't deserve it on the basis of this ad) is the absolute pits. Without doubt the most irritating single ad since the "money advice from the pocket" ones for a fast food restaurant which literally made me turn over for 30 seconds during its run few years ago.

On the flip side of the coin, I quite like the long-running TrophiesandMedals.com ad. Sometimes keeping it simple is all you need to do.

Most of the ads I hear on TS seem to be self promotion ads about other programs on the station. I'm surprised they have so many. If the station has made £7m in the last tax year they could have doubled that surely. In which case South City's post stating they must maximise shareholders profits can't be right on the face of it.

SC knows his stuff so I don't doubt his word but it does beg the question of how much TS lose by airing so many of their own promos.

It was so treacly it sounded like they were extending his contract for another five years rather than sacking him.

It's never a good thing to hear that kind of stuff from the boss. Generally it means the sack is around the next corner. Except there was no corner.

The RAJAR audience figures have been released for radio in the UK, including talkSPORT, for Q1 of 2012 (January to March).

talkSPORT's weekly audience in this period is 3,233,000 people - this figure is up 1.4% from the previous quarter but down ever so slightly at 0.5% from Q1 in 2011.

The average number of hours per listener is 6.6 hours per week - this is down from 6.8 hours from the previous quarter (same figure for a year ago too).

In summary, everything remains pretty static and there's not too much in the way of fluctuation across the board for talkSPORT.

As for the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast, they currently enjoy a weekly audience of 1,284,000 listeners each week for Q1 of 2012 - this figure is down 11,000 people from the previous quarter and down 22,000 people from a year ago.

Again, it's slightly down but I'd doubt it would be cause for alarm. If you stuck another zero on those down figures then maybe things would be different. But as I said, it's pretty static and no major changes or fluctuations to be seen.

In summary: it's as you were...

Interestingly, James Masterton from talkSPORT has been tweeing a few interesting bits on the RAJAR figures...

Quote:
So it can now be revealed. Three weekday shows now have over a million listeners a week, comfortably so.
Breakfast, H&J and Drive Time had all been said to have had over 1m listeners in the previous 12 months or so. Breakfast has that, Keys & Gray now have that, but which of H&J and Drive is likely to have dipped below and which one has stayed above 1m?

Quote:
Keys and Gray are over a million, 13% year on year increase in their timeslot. The pair are ratings GOLD
Quote:
Weekend Breakfast biggest ever audience. Up 12% on last quarter.
Quote:
Match Day Live on Saturdays - biggest ever audience. Up 4% year on year.
Quote:
Sunday Exclusive record figures too - up 22% year on year. We make the live football, and people tune in...
With the overall talkSPORT figures remaining fairly static somewhere on the station is likely to have seen a dip as all these programmes can't go up without something going down surely?

Clearly, we don't have the full picture - and this doesn't include the change to 24 hour sport - but where is it likely to be? Let the baseless speculation begin....

You've used the past participle 'gotten' before but it's so minor it matters not.

Frequency similar to the US I'd imagine. The (tv) ads are short, sharp and very intrusive. I've worked with people in ad agencies here so know the problems they face in pleasing the companies.

Back-to-back repetition of the same ad doesn't get the hostile reaction it would in many other countries.

From Radio Today:

Quote:
Former television presenters Keys and Gray are delivering a record number of listeners for talkSPORT’s mid-morning slot.

The station’s Q1 RAJAR remains the same at 3.2m listeners but three weekday shows now reach over 1 million.

In addition, Weekend Breakfast, Matchday Live and Sunday Exclusive have all recorded their highest ever listening figures.

Moz Dee, talkSPORT Programme Director said: “I’m really proud of all the presenters and all production teams who have continued to attract more listeners to their various shows. The Gold Sony Award for Keys & Gray proved how successful their show has become and these figures clearly back that up. With Euro 2012 just around the corner, we’re in great shape to bring live commentary of every game to our listeners.”

Scott Taunton, talkSPORT’s Chief Executive, said: “Over the past few months talkSPORT has announced a move to 24 hour sports coverage as well as our international expansion and these results show that we’re in the best position for a busy summer of sport and next season’s Barclays Premier League. Record figures across so many shows are a great achievement for everyone involved.”

...and talkSPORT's press release:

Quote:
talkSPORT has achieved its highest-ever audience reach on four shows, according to industry figures released by RAJAR today (17th May).

The official industry figures cover the first quarter of the year, from 2nd January to 1st April. The Sony Award winning Keys & Gray show, Weekend Breakfast, Matchday Live and Sunday Exclusive have all recorded their highest ever listening figures.

talkSPORT has reached 3.2 million listeners for this quarter, consistent with the number for Q4 at the end of 2011. Listening hours now stand at 21 million.

Keys & Gray (10am – 1pm weekdays) achieved 1 million listeners, a 13% year on year increase and the highest number of listeners ever in that timeslot. Earlier this week the show was named Best Sports Programme at the Sony Radio Academy Awards. Weekend Sports Breakfast also achieved its biggest ever audience with a 12% quarter on quarter increase in listeners. Live football continued to be a draw for listeners with Matchday Live recording a 4% year on year increase, while Sunday Exclusive saw a 22% year on year increase.

Moz Dee, talkSPORT Programme Director said: “I’m really proud of all the presenters and all production teams who have continued to attract more listeners to their various shows. The Gold Sony Award for Keys & Gray proved how successful their show has become and these figures clearly back that up. With Euro 2012 just around the corner, we’re in great shape to bring live commentary of every game to our listeners.”

talkSPORT reaches 2.6 million men representing 80% of the audience. 55% of the total talkSPORT audience are categorised as ABC1, an increase of 1% quarter on quarter.

I would just like to congratulate Rajar for being able to predict the audience figures for the Breakfast Show down to the last 4,000 when there are half that amount of new diaries per quarter handed out. Well done lads

Also well done to them for keeping these stations hooked on thinking these figures are in any way accurate. I should imagine they are celebrating wildly with all the three grands coming in.

It's not as if it's as hard as it was for the mayoral election though is it? Where they asked thousands upon thousands of voters which of the four main candidates they would vote for and still get that wildly wrong. Yet this sophisticated piece of mathematical genius covering 300 plus stations is the de facto answer to the figures for all of them right down to the last man listening.

I'll give my peice of baseless speculation. The figures are a load of crap.

The only time these figures will be discredited will be if TS figures were to fall dramatically and that will never happen with the the way this whole sham is set up.The RAJARs are never challenged as there are no other figures produced so basically its fill your boots for them as you say load of crap.

Oak, I've tried to find any scrap on information on how these figures are produced to see if they might produce accurate results and so far I haven't seen one thing to say they do. Short of claiming they are done by Ipsos Mori so they must be good there is nothing.

I heard a rep from Rajar on a BBC podcast and listened hoping for some clues. She waffled on about the new online diaries and a 'more enhanced user experience' and f*** all else which is the kind of cobblers you come out with when your just winging it.

I couldn't care less about the more satisfying user experience or if the diarist was sat there with a german bayonnet shoved up his backside while he's filling it out.

Durhams just said, Kenny was 'improving' Liverpool ?

How low will he go, to get callers to the show ? You'll not get a word in edge ways, trying to talk to Quinny !
