I bought a Sony Ereader but I can't use it because I'm photosensitive - the screen flashes dark when the page turns and this causes me problems.

I saw a TV ad for iPad where it looks like the page-turn is more like an actual page turn (no black screen-flash).

Can someone tell me if this is really so. Can you describe what the page turn looks like to me?!

The screens use two different technologies.

Kindle (and other e-readers) use an e-ink display, that requires a transition to clear the previous page and draw the next, this is usually a black flash. It does however, need no power to operate the display, except when the display needs to be changed, so they are very good for battery life, and for reading in bright sunlight.

iPad uses a backlit LCD screen, so there is no need for a flash on refresh, but because it's backlit LCD, you may struggle to read it in bright sunlight, and the battery life will be very poor compared to e-readers because the screen is powered and active all the time it is in use.

Thanks so much for taking the time to explain those technical differences - that's really useful information for me (and presumably there are other photosensitive people out there with the same problem).

Are you able to help with a description of the iPad page-turn?

If it is how it looks in the advert then I think that might be the answer for me, as ereaders are definitely out for me.

It emulates the turning of a page. There's no flicker at all.

I have both an eReader as well as an iPad. Have to say that the eReader is much better for the actual reading of books, though. I'd hate to have to read them on the iPad all the time.

Using the iPad would be the equivalent of watching a TV, so you should be fine.

Not sure if this is a solution that would work for you but could you not just turn your head to the side or look up at something else while you changed pages?

Don't think someone would want to do that all the time when reading a book.

All you'd have to do is blink as you turned a page, surely...
On my Sony eReader the page transition is quite fast so it's not like you'd need to look away/blink for a prolonged period of time and reading over long periods on an e-ink screen puts much less strain on the eyes than reading books on the iPad.

I agree, you could just blink during that short moment. And I think somebody photosensitive may find reading off LCD screen just as bad. By the way, the latest Kindle models do not refresh after each page turn, just every couple of them. But then it might be even more annoying if you have to count them... I'd say just blink during the refresh. Once the page is displayed you won't find a device that does this part better than an e-ink ereader. Apropos ipad and ereader, a friend of mine showed me how the reader works there and I just had to laugh at the animated page turns. That maybe nice as a gimmick, but it would drive me crazy after 20 page turns I hope it can be turned off.

Don't know this particular program, but the page turn animation should be configurable in Settings. You should just be able to turn it off. At least, that's how it works in the Kindle software for Ipod.

I am also photosensitive.

Ipad is smooth on Kindle. I read more books on my Ipad.

Android versions for phones ((I have HTC Wildfire)) are also smooth on Kindle but the screen is rather small.
