Is there a way I can take a movie on DVD and transfer it to my iPad?

There are several free applications out there that will convert for you. Handbrake is very good.

You can't do it legally, but yeah HandBrake is by far the best and its free.

You need to...

1) Rip the DVD. Handbrake can rip, but apparently cannot bypass copy protection. So, you can use something like...DVDFab HD Decrypter (free).

2) Convert the rip to an iPad friendly format (i.e. H.264 video within an .mp4 or .m4v container). Handbrake (free) is great for this, and has various presets for different devices, including the iPad.

3) Drag the converted film onto your iTunes library and then sync your iPad.

Nice summary, Matt D.

+1 for Handbrake.
