People are only giving out about Adele now because it's the new mainstream 'anti mainstream' thing to do.
Cue the "Well I NEVER liked her"s in 3 2 1..”
Giving her a Songwriter of the Year award implies that she's the best songwriter out there at the moment. This clearly isn't the case for anyone who listens to music, so the award is about something other than just songwriting talent; it's an acknowledgement of an ability to write songs which engage with popular public opinion, thus selling bucket loads of records.
This doesn't necessarily signify great songwriting but an ear for capturing what people want to hear. In its essence, as popular music, it's going to be music which is relatively simple and accessible. To my ears Adele's songs are bland and dull, but that's because I seek out music which is often difficult and challenging but songwriting awards won't go to the likes of Dan Bejar because the awards organisers are seeking to publicise themselves so they'll go for the more obvious popular artists, like (cue fits of incredulous laughter) Ed Sheeran and Take That.
