YES! I love Janis, there is something about her that resonates with me so much. Her music was the soundtrack to last summer for me.

Listening to The Supremes
I think they were like the original GIRL BAND

Always liked them. I may purchase a Greatest hits at some point

I never did think much to Diana ross's solo work though

The Supremes more than just a girl band

I know they are like the sound of the 60's catchy intricate pop for all occasions.

Me either there are a few good tracks here and there Theme From Mahogony, Touch Me In The Morning, Upside Down, Chain Reaction

It's like Lionel Richie though never like him v much either

Oh my god what an insult, i take that back. "slaps hand"

I loved Aint no mountain high enough and she was so brave to actually do her own recordings for the Billie Holiday Biopic which were rather enjoyable.

I liked Lionel's solo recordings.

For anyone who likes Little Boots, Niki & The Dove, La Roux - have you heard Charli XCX? Her music is a little darker and more hard-edged, and I like her. She has that little bit of difference, and she writes a catchy tune.

Haha mind you i say The Beatles were just a very good boy band so :P

And i have never paid that much attention to her my love of the 70's and 80's is embedded in artists like Bowie, Kate, Donna, George, depeche mode, alison moyet etc so Motown usually bypasses me

No malhala i like your description its part of my issue with N&TD a little to light have you listened to Esben and The Witch like a darker more gothic Florence and for Ellie Goulding fans lykke Li i follow rivers is a great track.

Oh you must give Motown a listen if you wish
I love it. If i was born in the 40/50/60'S, i would of loved it. So many amazing soul/motown artists.

I am also a lover of 80's music which my love for is continuing to grow. My idea of liking of 80's music was just Madonna but has since grown into Kate Bush and Cyndi Lauper

I mean I like your Aretha's, Ella's, billies, but i'm into more alternative and pop.

And there were loads of great bands and artists during that period if you like Kate try out Tori Amos not as good but she was influenced and shares a great many simalarities with her if you haven't listened already tryout Cornflake Girl

"Add Tori to the list"
I shall

I have heard good things about Tori and she has publicly said Kate Bush was a huge influence on her.

I'm not a great fan of Tori Amos, although I appreciate she is a great songwriter, and her piano-playing is brilliant.

There are some vague similarities between her and Amanda Palmer: piano, personal politics, background. I just prefer Amanda's music more - it hits more of a chord with me. She's worth checking out, especially if you like your singers theatrical and a bit rude.

Liking the love for lyke Li her and Florence are on my list.

And yes Sarah Mclachlan, Tori, Bjork, Pj Harevy etc who spearheaded the singer songwriter movement of the 90's were all to an extent inspired by Kate her legacy lives on (i must apologise total fan boy for kate )

And yeah I appreciate Tori and like her earlier works under the pink etc.

Her best album IMO, creative, flamboyant, intriguing, but mainly completely bonkers!

For me her best is HOL as that completely encapsulates Kate as an artitst from the big pop anthems the to the experimental concept and story arcs.

But The Dreaming is Brave, daring, dark, eerie and completely off its box

And yes i heard LM doesn't surprise me i love Bjork bonkers but lovely and a great body of work too

Good thread Hav_Mor, thanks. It's nice to see a genuine thread about enjoying and appreciating music and different opinions.

I'm also a big Joni fan and have been listening to the classic, Blue, a lot lately. I'm actually going through a big Laurel Canyon 60/70's music phase at the moment; Crosby, Stills and Nash, Neil Young, Joni, Carole King, James Taylor, etc. There's just something so honest about the music and the CSN harmonies are incredible.

Currently I'm listening to Best Coast's new album, "The Only Place", personal highlights include The Only Place and Last Year

I'm also listening to First Aid Kit in particular Emmylou, King Of The World and The Lion's Roar. I need to buy that album at some point.

I've been listening to Fiona Apple a lot recently too. Fast As You Can, Criminal and Please Please Please are great songs.

I'd forgotten how much I loved Sia's music. It's nice to see her having some commercial success even though I'm not a fan of Flo Rida's work. Some of my favourites include Buttons, I'm In Here, Hurting Me Now and Never Gonna Leave Me.

I found a band called Surfer Blood by accident on Spotify last year. Floating Vibes, Take It Easy and Harmonix played on my iPod whilst on shuffle the other day. Their music sounds summery to me.

I love The Civil Wars at the moment too. Barton Hollow never gets old. I love I've Got This Friend too. Their voices were made for each other!
The Civil Wars album has not strayed much from my ears since it came out. I can't get enough of them at all.

I also really enjoyed the First Aid Kit album and I like Sia and Fiona Apple a lot. I'll definitely check out Best Coast (have heard lots but haven't taken the opportunity to listen) and Surfer Blood.

The blue album is incredible. I go through phases when that is all I listen to.. as cliche as that sounds.

I can't wait to see Patti Smith next month.

Oh how varied my music taste is...

Not cliche at all. It's a very special album. Now, I'm going to be cliche and quote Love Actually of all bloody things in reference to Joni, 'I love her, and true love lasts a lifetime.'

Oooh, Patti Smith will be good I'd say. I must admit that I have Horses but Patti Smith never struck a chord with me personally. I absolutely recognize and appreciate her talent and her contribution though and she sure can write a lyric... Redondo Beach being a great example.

Hey Waldenstein im just glad someone suggested and gave me the idea to start it .

And talking of the Ladies i have recently rediscovered my love for Stevie Nicks Edge Of Seventeen and Bella Donna Really striking a chord.

And for anyone loving your Jonis, Patti's , civil Wars if you haven't Laura Marling she is great she is in that old skool tradition of biographical singer songwriter.

Buffy Sainte Marie is also excellent. She has recorded songs in so many different styles, and her singing really goes straight to your heart.
