I'll second the Laura Marling suggestion. She's very talented and yes, you can hear the Joni influence as well as English folk. I find it a little bewildering that she can write so insightfully and eloquently given her age. It's kind of like seeing a 7-year old play Rachmaninoff on the piano or something!

I know im always blown away by how articulate she is especially being just a year older than myself its just like woah i think her first album is my favourite there is a lightness and sense of fun and freedom that isnt found on her other albums I speak is quite dark and a heavy listen whereas A creature doesnt pack the punch or feeling of either.

Laura Marling's debut is amazing. She is like a British Joni

But from album 2, she changed her style and for me it didn't agree at all i felt the Beauty of her vocals become lost in the production.

Oooh, Patti Smith will be good I'd say. I must admit that I have Horses but Patti Smith never struck a chord with me personally. I absolutely recognize and appreciate her talent and her contribution though and she sure can write a lyric... Redondo Beach being a great example.
Love, Love Actually!!

I think she will be incredible. You should read her book just kids, it's one of the most wonderful books I have ever read. It's not really about her music but her friendship with Robert Mapplethorpe. It's beautifully written. She is a brilliant writer.

LMFAO! Emma Thompson is my favourite in it. I think i'm going to watch that later!

Who mentioned Stevie Nicks earlier in the thread? I love her! Incredible song writer. I loved the last album too, really wish she toured the UK properly.

Oh and I have tried to get into Tori Amos before but I just couldn't take to her music. Although I do think she is extremely talented. She wrote a song about being raped didn't she? It's so raw it must of took a lot for her to do that.

Oh really? I think she is brilliant, Hugh too. Although he does seem to play the same character in every film.

Ahhh Fleetwood Mac. Love 'em! They too remind me of last summer. My last summer consisted of listening to Stevie Nicks/FM and Janis Joplin on repeat constantly.

WOW, didn't know that. I always did get the impression that she was lovely though. Could you recommend any of her albums? I think i'm going to give her another go.

p.s isn't this thread lovely (so far) which can be quite rare on here

I know this may be considered Blasphemy but its like This Steven Fry, Hugh Laurie, Emma Thompson A typical intellects with a superior attitude just so bloody annoying but im sure they are nice people

I know there is just this underlying sense of total calm and cool even when its interwoven with more serious issues just enjoyable to listen too.

And I know i read about and thought wow just so cool and not being a massive fan from what others have suggested to me Under The Pink, Boys From Pele, From The choir girl Hotel, To Venus and back and a her best of as an intro

And i know so far void of trolls and wind up merchants is it really a DS thread

I actually kind of agree with that first sentence. aha.

I'm going to give those a listen to, thankyou (:

Let's hope it stays that way. It's nice to have a thread where people can just discuss what music they like. I also like that a lot of the posts have consisted of people saying they aren't fans of particular artists but respect their talent. You don't read that much on here.

Haha bloody Cambridge graduates

And i think i may too its wrong but i cant help but dismiss he as Kate Bush light which is odd as i do adore Bjork Vespertine if you haven't heard its just so wonderful.

And it is you can rave about who you like whilst finding similar artists or new ones you would never have thought of listening too and just as music should be a place of discussion for all .

Anyway talking of Bjork, Tori, and well not so much Pj Harvey an interesting article from Q 1993 involving an interview with all three do enjoy.

Oooh, Hav Mor that's fighting talk... Emma Thompson is one my favourite actresses if not my favourite. That climactic seen at the end of In The Name of The Father is an incredible display of acting as are her performances in Remains of the Day, Howards End, etc. I can see why you dislike that Cambridge scene though, even though I am a fan.

Back on topic, I love Stevie Nicks and Fleetwood Mac also in their various incarnations.

Madonna38, I've always meant to read Patti Smith's biography. I've heard it's a great read. At the moment I'm on the lookout for a book on the Laurel Canyon scene seeing as I'm so into the music at the moment. I find how the scene emerged as this almost introspective take in response to the other worldliness/LSD influence of the psychedelic scene very interesting and then how it changed with success and of course how it strayed very far away from the initial innocence with the Charles Manson association.

Yeah i think its an unfair comparison but she kind of lends herself easily to the comparisons on her earlier works but she develops and becomes her own.

And haha Listening to her loud on the bus is the best the looks you get and i haven't no funnily enough it was mentioned in the link i sent you to youtube i go

I am gonna explore Janet Jackson's discography tonight. I recently got into Control and my god, that is one hell of an album. I always thought she was overrated but now im older and wiser, i have learned to appreciate things more.

I also need to shift through Bjork and Tori amos at some point

I gave Sarah M a go, i couldn't get into her music but she does a few songs I like. The fact her song from Toy story 2 reduced me to tears, she will always have a place in my music world.

I adore Laura Marling, I think that she is amazing!

I was listening to Paper Aeroplanes in the car on the way home. Cliche, Lost, Dancing Every Night and Skies On Fire are my favourites. The whole album is good, to be honest. I found them by chance on another music forum.

LMFAO! Do you like Bjorks recent album?

OMG I am laughing
Bjork: are you being sued aswell?
I can imagine her saying that.

I am grateful...grapefruit. I was just reminded of her brit speech.

I love Janet. her other albums are a bit overwrought and even Janet. at 28 songs is a total slog.

And i love Sarah M she won't be everyone's cup of tea she can be quite American Coffee house music but there is some truly Beautiful stuff by her.

And i love from Laura Ghosts, New Romantic, Failure, Cross your Fingers, Captain and the hourglass, Shine, Goodby England and my fave of hers Blackberry Stone.

''Do you want us to shoot him'' i love how Pj just pops up from time to time with a few musings and the best line ''Your Uncle Is ****ing My Niece'' just random

Have you heard Is A Hope (Drinking Alone) by Laura Marling? There is a studio version somewhere but it's impossible to find. I think it was meant for her second album but she decided against adding it. Only live versions are on youtube except a tiny snippet of the studio version with dialogue from series 4 of Skins over the top.

I think it's a beautiful song.

That interview was one of the funniest interviews I have ever read.
Bjork: I just wasn’t interested in boys until a few years ago. I thought they were shit.

How blunt.

I think PJ can come across as being quite dark in her music but that interview shows her sense of humour. She is very intelligent too. Wonderful woman.

I know its like three friends bottle of wine let the convo flow and record the results.

And just saw thier performance the best jam session ever just so raw and natural.

And yes like some Eerie creature from the deepest darks of England almost like a raven but who happens to be funny and smart.

It worked really well, they all complimented one another very well, you could tell no part of that was untrue or false. It all seemed very natural.

PJ is just brilliant, adore her. I love her accent too. lol.
