I've just been reading about Kylie Minogue being mentioned in Neighbours (in which she used to appear, of course), which got me thinking of other instances in soap where they have sort of opened a 'wormhole' between the real world and their soap-world, which could lead to a character discovering their own existence as a character in a soap opera, such as an allusion to popular-culture which may bring a character back to discovering their own life is a 'soap', if you catch my drift. If Kylie Minogue exists in Neighbours-world, for instance, wouldn't the residents of the show be aware of her beginnings as a soap actress, on a soap which runs in an uncanny parallel to their own lives?

Some instances I can recall off the top of my head:

During Southend week last year, several references were made to Spandau Ballet by Heather, with Fatboy and Whitney questioning who Spandau Ballet were. If Spandau Ballet exist in Walford-World, wouldn't people have recognised the remarkable resemblance between Steve Owen and the band's bass player, Martin Kemp? What if Whitney and Fatboy had googled Spandau Ballet and decided to check up on the members later exploits? Wouldn't they have been quite shocked to discover his work in a soap opera called 'Eastenders', which bared an uncanny resemblance to their own lives?

I saw an episode of Coronation Street a while back when Tracy Barlow had just got out of prison. She described prison as 'nothing like Bad Girls', or something along those lines. If Tracy Barlow and other Coronation Street residents had watched Bad Girls back in the day, wouldn't they have recognised Frankie Baldwin, Cilla Battersby-Brown and Frank Foster as characters from the show?!

There is also the obvious reference Dot made in Eastenders about Coronation Street's anniversary, and the two shows have shared several actors and actresses over the years. Surely Dot has noticed the uncanny resemblance between Stella and Walford's very own Cindy Beale?

Can anybody think of any other instances of this that have taken place?

Back in 2003 when Shane Richie had just release I'm Your Man, it was playing in the vic and Alfie said how he loved the song, or something along those lines

That reminds me of when, a few years ago, Oliver in Neighbours sang a line of Stefan Dennis's 'Don't It Make You Feel Good.'

I think Ken and Deirdre once mentioned watching dancing on ice, they must have recognised Kirk and Ashley(and anyone else who has been on from corrie)

caution: messing with soap opera fourth walls in this manner can only lead to inter-reality folding paradoxes and further DSFM lobotomies.

Boyzone music has often been played in the Rovers when Keith Duffy was serving as a barman.

Oh, I've thought of something else! Bradley in Eastenders was a Doctor Who fan wasn't he? Wouldn't he have thought it odd that his stepmum had starred in an episode with Chris Eccleston? And what about when Den's 'ghost' was bothering Peggy in an episode? And wouldn't have thought it odd that his home of Albert Square had featured in that Children in Need 'Dimensions in Time' special years ago?

I love things like this.

The details escape me now, but I can remember a scene in The Kabin (Corrie) when I was a kid that clearly showed one of the characters on the cover of a magazine on the shelf in the background. I think that was an oversight rather than a deliberate inclusion though

This might be an urban myth, but didn't Sarah-Lou Platt once have a poster of popstar/her own brother Adam Rickett on her bedroom wall once upon a time

In the Live episode of Two pints of Lager and a packet of Crisps (airs on BBC three), Janet was watching the television with a confused expression on her face, another character asked her what was wrong and she said "I was just watching BBC three and..............never mind"

Also, in 90s sitcom Game On, they changed the actor who played Matthew. After they changed him to the new guy, the 3 main characters were sitting on the couch watching television, one of them commented on the show they were watching and said (I think Martin) "Oh they've changed the guy who plays that character" (or something like that) and then Mandy said "Oh I HATE it when they do that"....... Then both Mandy and Martin turned in and looked at the new Matthew suspiciously lol

As Dave Lister HAS visited Coronation Street, if Lloyd mentions watching Red Dwarf then that would surely be a veritable multi-dimensional Mobius strip of colliding realities of cataclysmic proportions.

Rita Sulivan mentioned she watches Keeping Up Appearances - so must have noticed the strong resemblance between Oswald and Eddie Yeats! I was disappointed she didn't mention it in the episode!

The Nolan sisters appeared on Brookside as themselves...along with Carol Smiley. 2 / 3 years later, one of the Nolan sisters joined playing a character who was the mum of the boy who drowned a girl in a pond.

This is sounding very frightening.

The Nolans (minus Bernie) appeared as themselves in an episode of Brookside. Bernie Nolan then went on to appear as Diane Murray in the soap.

Why is it frightening?

In an episode of Neighbours Max Hoyland went "Computer says no" clearly mocking Little Britain. Some time later this happened.

The best one is from 'Coronation Street' when, after Richard Hillman's crimes were out in the open, Gail chatted with her mum Audrey about watching 'Doctor Who' as a child, and being scared.

Gail's portrayer Helen Worth played a major guest role in 1971 'Doctor Who' serial 'Colony in Space'.
