P J Harvey's Let England Shake Wins Best Album Ivor
Couldn't find a thread on the album so had to start a new one, I'm afraid. Genuine & heartfelt congrats to Polly Jean on this, which ties in neatly with her Mercury win for the same album. 2 of the most prestigious awards in the UK musical calendar, that is some achievement. For someone to have lasted as long as she has in this business and to be still producing music on her own terms is testament to her talent/stickability/commitment. Anyone agree? Quote:
Singer-songwriter PJ Harvey’s 'Let England Shake' has been awarded the Ivor Novello 'Album Award' at today’s ceremony in Central London – beating other other nominees including Adele (for her huge-selling album '21') and Kate Bush (for '50 Words For Snow'). The album was the eighth studio album of her career and has now go on to earn a Gold certification in the UK. Written and performed by PJ Harvey herslef, 'Let England Shake', was released to wide-spread critical acclaim in February last year, with NME commenting “Over two decades, she’s been one of Britain’s most consistently talented songwriters and performers… her most brilliant album to date,” before giving her a 10/10. 'Let England Shake' has been recognised as the best album of 2011 by numerous others (including Mojo, Uncut and The Guardian) and was awarded the Barclaycard Mercury Prize for Album of the Year, making Harvey the only artist to have received this award twice, previously winning in 2001 for 'Stories From The City, Stories From The Sea'. Harvey also received NME’s Outstanding Contribution to Music 2011 and the Uncut Music Award 2011. http://www.stereoboard.com/content/view/172673/9 |

Thanks, but I'll stick to the other thread about the Ivor Novello awards if it's all the same with you

It is an amazing album. Apparently its the best album of the year AND it wrote itself.
If reminds me of the year the Oscars nominated the Two Towers for Best Film but not Best Director because obviously that film Shot and put itself together in a similar fashion to Let England Shake. |

Seriously no way its probably because she won the mercury and is the cool indie album that sold very little so just had to win.
Just joking but I did want 50 words for snow to win but alas. |

Just joking but I did want 50 words for snow to win but alas. I remember buying it the day it came out, back in November, and listening to it while walking the dog and it started snowing. Perfect soundtrack to freezing cold weather. Who knew it would still be an apt soundtrack for the middle of May though? Also every album should feature Stephen Fry speaking Klingon. |

Brilliant, congratulations to her. I know some people either love or hate the album but I personally love it, even though I do have to be in the mood to listen to it. Brilliant concept and the lyrics are excellent.

I've not listened to her other work yet but I love Let England Shake and can see why it's winning awards. Congratulations to PJ!
