It was different in 2010 because we knew Dannii was returning. She was an established judge and Simon and Cheryl was there.

Tulisa, Louis, Gary and Rod sounds like a complete snooze, sorry.
So guest judges only work if Danni is going to take over Get over it Danni is no more.

I can't wait for the line up you've suggested

Really sounds like they cannot get anyone to commit. Reckon this will be car crash as i don't think three old men (sorry Gary) will be that appealing to teenagers and teenagers are the main demographic of the show.

I disagree. Right from the started the X Factor has been a 'family' show and not a 'teenager' show.

Wrong. Britain's Got Talent is the family show, as is Strictly. X Factor is aimed primarily at a younger demographic.

Strictly should have no trouble beating X Factor in the ratings again this year. X Factor had a very bad 2011 by all accounts and this signing does nothing to dispel worries that the 2012 series will go the same way.

....and apparently Robbie Williams is going to guest judge at the Liverpool auditions http://tellymix.co.uk/reality-tv/the...liverpool.html. Does it seem odd to anyone else that they are not getting females to fill a female seat on the panel. Or are they going for the 3 male, 1 female a la The Voice. Not copying are we Mr Cowell?

I'm sure when they get a permanent replacement they'll be female, but for guest judges they should just go for the best available, regardless of their gender. Robbie would be a really good signing for them.

The Voice is hardly the first show to have a 3 male, 1 female panel either. Strictly Come Dancing has had one since 2004 and Pop Idol was 3 male, 1 female back in 2001.

It would be very easy for them to get one guest judge for each of the 6 cities I think that's the most likely outcome - with Rod taking one of the cities.

X Factor had a bad year because of the farce of the first week, and the judges having no chemistry. And we have no idea what will happen again this year.

If that happens then the show is well and truly dead!

Dannii worked though. She was brilliant.

It doesn't matter if she sold 100 records or 10,000,000, the dynamic of that panel worked. I think Rod is a legend but I don't think this will help the ratings at all.

I'm over it! I'm glad Dannii ISN'T there! She was on the show in its prime, now its going downhill.

You obviously don't get what I'm saying. Guest judges work when an established judge is coming back. If they use guest judges and the new judge turns up at judges houses or live shows, it doesn't work. Just ask Ellen on American Idol! And that was a show where they didn't even use mentors!

You're really jumping the gun, rather. These are just the open auditions stage. I'm sure the new judge will be in place at the later auditions or bootcamp at the latest.

You don't even know what Rod will be like as a judge, he has a lot of charisma, perhaps he'd be brilliant too.

And we don't really know for sure whether it WOULD have worked if Dannii had come back - the panel was a lot different in 2010. How do you know for sure that she would have gelled with Barlow and Tulisa?

Weirdly, I was thinking just the other day that they should try and get a pop star from the 70s or 80s for the panel. Some one with charisma and personality, but also someone who has the experience to mentor (I've never seen Rod in an interview so I don't know what he's like).

But I was thinking of someone as a replacement for Gary or Louis

And I was thinking Simon Le Bon (not that he would do it) or maybe someone from Bananarama.

Considering how popular David Walliams is on BGT, I would like to see someone who can deliver good feedback but also bring a bit of fun to the panel and not take it so bloody seriously (but not as bad as Louis ).

I'd rather Rod than that complete and utter c*** Gary, anyday.

According to The Sun a few weeks back Simon Cowell allegedly didn't want Gary back but ITV over ruled him.

Rod should have replaced Louis full time because Louis quite frankly doesn't deserve a place on this panel and adds nothing to the show. He is always on something like 2% in all favourite judge polls! why he gets kept on is a huge mystery.

Some people don't know who Rod Stewart is?! How is that possible? You may not like him (and I'm not sure he'd be a great judge) but he's a huge star. And it might have been a while since he's had a UK number 1, but at least he's actually had one unlike, err, Dannii Minogue...

I just hope the guest judge think is because whoever they have lined up is busy at the moment, and not because they still haven't found anyone.

hmm, i think they need another female to even it out a bit if im being completely honest. im sure rod will provide some quite good moments though. i was really hoping for katy perry... but simon obviously doesn't give two hoots about the UK show anymore.

I'm annoyed about the guest judge thing. I hated the inconsistency of 2010. We had some brilliant guest judges (Nicole Scherzinger + Katy Perry) and the rest awful (Pixie Lott, Geri Halliwell and Natalie Imbruglia).

I'd rather they postponed the auditions or used someone less known. Personally I'd put Alexandra Burke or Alesha Dixon on the panel if they were that desperate.

Good point about David Walliams. I remember there were a lot of people who didn't want him on the panel when he was first announced as judge - and look how wrong they were.

Maybe Rod would bomb, but at least give him a bloody chance. He couldn't be as wooden as Barlow or as idiotic as Walsh - surely?

Just make Boy George an offer that would be hard to resist and have him on the panel, He hates Louis, it would be tv gold in the making, Plus Boy George would be brilliant, he has more Personality than Gary, Louis and Tulisa put together.

Should be quite interesting I would think. Surprised no one's mentioned that Rod was a guest mentor in Series 3 (Leona's year) where there was Ben Mills who had a similar voice to Rod's.

Of course after praising all the contestants on the show, later in the week on the radio he slammed them when he didn't think he was live on air!

Yes, Boy George would be brilliant but very unpredictable (probably why he won't be asked to do it). And didn't Noel Gallagher say he'd be willing to do it for £1million? That's within their price range and they could do a lot worse.
