You can see that Pudsey loves it. If he didn't, he wouldn't do it. Bit extreme comparing it to dancing bears IMO. Do you have a dog and if so, have you taught it to sit?
I spoke to a dog trainer. He trains police dogs and sniffer dogs and is a policeman. he knows a lot about dog training.

Him: To show who is boss. Hardly ever have to use it. But it has to be used once or twice at the start to show what it can do. Then the fear of the stick makes the process easy without actually having to use it.
I think that it is the same with a wild animal like a bear. for starters it takes a lot of guts, teh stick is used at the start. Then the bear learns faster and fears the stick.

The RSPCA and myself would strongly disagree with the 'stick' bit and I doubt that it is 'official' police policy. I am reminded of a case a few years ago when a young cadet blew the whistle on a training officer for using excessive violence and killing a dog. He had raised concerns early on but had been told 'this is what the dog training books say, but we know better' or words to that effect. There is no need for using violence or it's threat to teach animals!

as for dancing bears its disgusting i remember watching something about it, they take the claws and teeth out so they cant attack them (such degrading treatment for a bit of money)
and the police using a stick, he shouldnt be using any such thing, forcing an animal by hitting it to do something it doesnt want to do is horrible

Agreed. The official training scheme for military dogs (presumably police too?) is positive reinforcement, not negative. Either the copper trained years ago when these methods were slightly more acceptable (lie the roled up newspaper as a toilet training aid
) or is talking sh*t and trying to ake himself sound 'hard' or he's a complete idiot that shouldn't be training a dog at all. A relationship built on fear is never 100% secure. What if the dog was out on a call and misbehaved - no stick = one uncontrollable dog.
Don't agree with the stick thing at all. My Uncle is a dog trainer and I remember years ago he was holding a class for new dog owners and somebody said to him that they were told using a stick is normal to let them see who is in charge. My Uncle replied he'd never once used a stick on a dog and if a dog trainer says they need to use a stick to show them who's in charge, then their shite at training dogs

Like its ok to eat beef, but if you went to India, you couldn't eat beef. If you go to Pakistan you can't eat pork. If you go to Korea you can eat dog etc.

Dancing bears are often made to 'dance' by being put on hot coals which forces them to try and move their feet off them to avoid burning. To us it looks like a dance but to them, it's trying to avoid agony. It's not just waving a stick at them a few times.
And Pudsey is a pet, the dancing is just an added bonus for Ashleigh. It's just a spin off from training him, she didn't set out to make money from him. The bears are not pets, they aren't loved, they're just used by greedy people to make money from those with no ethics.

You can't compare the two!
On one hand you have a wild animal, chained, and abused to make it 'dance'.
On the other, you have a much loved domestic animal, who wouldn't do it if he didn't want to - and more to the point, wouldn't be made to do it either.
You can roll your eyes as much as you like but the comparison is, frankly, ridiculous.
