Not he's over the moon as he actually nominated someone else to do it but they chose him. The kids have told him they'll disown him if he embarrasses them, and knowing him he will . We've had a pretty rotten year up to now so it's something to look forward to for all of us.

So his thoughtfulness came back to him, well I'm sure the kids will be as proud as punch even if he does show them up a bit and I hope some luck comes your way from it

Nice to hear you say no, but in reality your business

I was just thinking, your family will have that story to pass down through generations, what a great thought

I work with someone who was a British record holder, but wouldn't be competing in the Summer Olympics anyway even if he hadn't retired some years ago

We know 2 that are going to the paralympics that also went to Beijing and came home with medals. And 2 or 3 that are going to the regular Olympics for the 1st time.

I've briefly met a couple of competitors. Don't know them well, just introduced and shook hands.

The Brownlees and Stu Hayes in the triathlon and Natasha Jones (women's boxing team) lives near a friend.

That's good enough Ignazio, did you get to watch Tom Daley yesterday in the Olympic Trial Comp.............he was amazing, I had not realised there was a live link on British Swimming and found it by chance.

I noticed you have a thread about him

Not personally, but I work security at Loughborough Uni and train in the powerbase gym, so will meet most of them when they come to train and get kitted out.

A colleague at work (now an ex-colleague, in fact) left her job a couple of months back to become a pro cyclist on the European women's circuit with the hope of getting a place in the women's road race for New Zealand. Genevieve Whitson is her name.

Impressive website Grass

I started this thread not to say 'I know someone' but to hopefully make athletes come across as people whom we know and maybe some stories will come out

Man that's crazy! I wish I knew some that competes in the Summer Olympic. How does it feel like? I always wonder the feeling of being friends with celebrity.

It's not like that as in celebrity , it's just knowing that you watched them compete as a child and watched them grow..........you know the down bits and the up bits for them but they still strive to achieve it and if they do it's a good feeling God knows how they feel

I'm mad on children with sport, I love it to pieces and if they achieve at any level I'm on a buzz

My niece would definitely say there is nothing celebrity about it!!

She will, however, attest to the hours and hours and hours of training, often undertaken at God awful times whilst still being at school. The pressure is heavier now as she is at Loughborough undergoing 'final conditioning' prior to the competiton [sounds almost eugenic to me].

I almost forgot that my brother in law is awaiting 'final trials' to do the basketball courtside commentary. The competition is almost as fierce as the actual game.

We were all annoyed with our boss - Edinburgh University - for not giving her leave of absence and a bit of support, but she hadn't been with us for very long.

Sadly didn't see Tom qualify - just read about it. So pleased for him - he's a wonderful example of what a young man should be.

I was gutted not to get tickets for his Olympic events.

I have met Paula Radcliffe many times, she is such a friendly woman. Also met Dai Greene the other week and often see Steve Backley in the gym.

It's hardy stuff Tombstone and many do not realise the amount of training and commitment with only the best getting through, they each and all have my utter respect.

Hey, good luck to him too

I bet they are kicking themselves now but they will still like the association with her I bet

I did nip on here to post the link but felt stupid as it really was in it's latter stages. What a nice thing to say about him......... took a bit of panning earlier this year, he is just a young lad. I love his Video with his mates

Sorry to hear that Ignazio, cheer him on via the sofa and maybe your thread on here

I know someone who has competed in a Games...who won a Gold Medal too...

One of the Orthopaedic specialists who has worked with my son is Mr Richard Dodds, the captain of the men's 1988 hockey team.

I used to play hockey for Crawley in the 80's. The Truman League was where a lot of the Olympic team were playing, so I played against most of them at some time or another. Richard Leman left me for dead several times when I was marking him - he was a difficult man to foul.

The only person I did not meet was Sean Kerly - he played for Canterbury in a different league.

Paul Barber was two years ahead of me at my school, but I didn't know that until I went to a reunion many years later!

Loving reading your stories but sad news today that Dan will not be competing in the Breast as he as got a shoulder injury. It came on the local news at tea time. Gutted wondering how he must be feeling, I will get some feedback from my daughter at some point.

If if paves the way for another to compete and have the thrill then I wish them well too

Lovely thread Mrs T My nearest brush with anyone even associated with the Olympics was that I went to the same school as Mary Peters (not at the same time ). I remember her coming especially to show us her gold medal

ETA - a very brave lady, she had death threats and all sorts
