DC Comics to make Major Character Gay
ABC News sat down with DC's Senior VP Courtney Simmons and asked for a comment on the story that DC is planning to re-introduce a pre-existing character into the New DCU, but change the character's sexual orientation.
Simmons confirmed the rumor, stating: "One of the major iconic DC characters will reveal that he is gay in a storyline in June." so who's it going be? |

Great, weeks of hints Batman is gay, before the reveal turns out to be Plastic man or some such.

This link is interesting ....
http://robot6.comicbookresources.com...parently-male/ Apparently the main message is that "it's somebody who hasn't been seen since the relaunch of the New 52 universe", so you can put away all your Superman and Batman theories (Besides which Bruce has sh***ed Catwoman and half his female cast since the 52 launch, and Clark has been moping after Lois). I've been a big fan of the new 52 work so far, but this smacks too much of changes for reasons of sensationlism only. Don't get me wrong, if DC had re-introduced the characters sexuality in the same way as Batwoman, Stormwatch, or even Bunker in Teen Titans then it would seem less of an "issue" or statement, and would work fine. Still judging by the reactions so far, it's created a buzz. The smart money is on Wally West by the way ... Last edited by Wulfster : 22-05-2012 at 17:41. Reason: bad spelling |

Is this in response to Marvel's Ultimate X-men gay marriage?

Shazam!
If it is him (and I personally think it's unlikely), how are they going to handle the fact that his alter-ego is a 12-15 year old boy? Of course they're still "re-writing" his origin in Action Comics and things may change (and as Billy Batson has already been introduced in the 52-universe it's another reason that it's not him), but I can't see that flying in the US! Personally I still think it's going to be smaller-fry .... |

Booster has been in the new 52 line-up since the beginning and was in charge of the JLI (before it got cancelled). It's supposed to be someone not seen so far, so unless somebody at DC is lying (quite possible), it's not him either. Also, I'm still pretty certain it's not Captain Marvel (or just "Shazam" as he will be know in the new line-up.) The rainbow flag pose was from an old DC "tolerance campaign" and was dusted off for that article. Seeing as the "Christian Mum's" movement (or nazi's & facists as they are known over here) has just started to campaign against the Northstar marriage in X-Men, I think DC are going to have to tread carefully ... http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/comics/n...y-wedding.html |

There goes my guess then, but looking at the character he would be the most logical. Some wit posted elsewhere that it would be the 'Pied Piper'. For a start is he an actual DC character (i'm a Marvel fan)? And if he is a character- i don't think DC would open themselves up to the plethora of jokes that would be forthcoming...

![]() You're not going to believe this, but ... He was a DC character in the pre-52 ("old") universe and was one of the "rogues" that fought Flash. He was a regular character in the Wally West Flash comics as he reformed, revealed he was gay and fought on the side of good with Wally. He is apparently (although I must have missed him) in the current storylines, and is still gay. Another suspect bites the dust. Wiki entry link below; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pied_Piper_(comics) See, as a looo-oong time DC fan (for over 20 years) who is heterosexual (just to qualify my viewpoint), that's why I don't understand all the fuss and the "major announcements". Piper and other characters (The Question being another iconic figure) were revealed as gay in a realistic and matter-of-fact way within storylines in an adult manner, and it totally worked. So now why are DC now doing the equivalent of going, "Whoah!! You'll never guess who's going to be gay! It's someone ICONIC, but we're not saying who!! Excited yet..are you? .. huh, are you?" I know it's for publicity, and to ride on the X-men marriage, just seems a bit counter-productive to me ... |

Why not introduce a new character, establish him as gay and then get on with it? As others have said, it does seem like a rather large 'lets do it for the sake of doing it' moment.
Marvel currently has 4 gay characters that I know of, and I don't remember any announcements in the press about them. Not starting a MArvel vs DC debate, just saying you can have gay characters without making a big song and dance about it. |

Marvels X-Men gay marriage is clearly a response to the Life with Archie issue where a grown up Kevin Keller marries his bf. |

"DC Comics reveals all Marvel characters are gay" Quote:
IRON MAN, the Hulk and all other Marvel comic characters ever have been outed as gay by rival publisher DC.
Comics giant DC teased fans earlier this week with the revelation that a popular character or characters would be revealed as homosexual. However fans had assumed the publisher would out some of its own characters, rather than those of its highly profitable competitor. A DC spokesman said: “Our industry has to reflect changing times and diverse lifestyles, even if the bulk of its readership is heterosexual young males. “I can exclusively reveal that pretty much all the characters in the Marvel universe are gay. It is, in fact, a gay universe. (snip) |

Lots of comments on the DS article itself.
If it's him, then it's kind of ironic that the character pre-New 52 was married with two super-powered kids, a daughter (Jade) and a son (Obsidian), where the son came out and was a long-standing gay super-hero. I'm assuming that Obsidian will not exist in the Earth 2 comic in New-52. He does only exist on Earth 2 doesn't he, I'm rapidly starting to lose the plot ... time for another retcon!! |

![]() Before New 52, the Alan Scott Green Lantern was originally based on a Golden Age character that wasn't associated with the Green Lantern corps. His ring was "magic-based", and came from a meteor (or something). The reason for his goofy costume there, is that he was crippled in a battle, and used his ring to mock-up some kind of exo-suit so that he was still mobile ... I'm not making this up .. honest!! One thing we're all forgetting here, is that this is all on Earth 2 (again), so it's not even on the same earth/dimension as Supes and Bats, etc. Hardly Earth(2)-shattering ...

^Sounds similar to Iron Man's origin. He was forced to wear his chestplate 24/7 at first, because of a injury to his heart (Vietnam War shrapnel).
